January Weather In The PNW 2024 (Part III) - The Warming Shot

The best part about the weather recently is, not only can it be cold, miserable rainy down here in the lowlands.  But it can also be the same amount of cold, miserable and rainy in the mountains.  Nobody wins!  Yay lol

Currently 36 here with rain, 35 at Government Camp.  Barely freezing at Timberline.

How's the skiing today? Looks like it would be a beautiful day for it. I miss skiing

Edit: Never mind. Webcams look gray. Snoqualmie probably got rain on top of all the new snow, which is gross. Not sure about Crystal or Stevens though.

It's not too bad down here at bachelor. Pretty cloudy but the snow conditions are good.Screenshot_20240120-164828_Gallery.thumb.jpg.650383cf626f218e07c030817c2f77c6.jpg

My 80 year old mother couldn't stand being trapped by snow in her sloped driveway up in Bellingham so she figured out how to use the electric snowblower that my dad bought years ago and cleared her driveway today and then took pics and sent them to me and my sister.  I specifically told her not do that... particularly since there was a layer of ice under the snow.    If it hadn't melted by today then I was going up there tomorrow but she couldn't wait.    They have lots of snow on the ground up there still.

there was a story on the news the other day that they're seeing this in younger and younger people (Colon cancer specifically).  they think it's something environmental affecting our food supply but they're not sure what yet.  it's happening in people who are otherwise completely healthy

My wife's job is going through all of the pathology reports for the area and cataloging cancer findings in the national cancer database.  She said the same thing, cancer is showing up earlier and earlier, though it seems to be breast cancer up here.  A lot of women figuring out they have breast cancer during their pregnancy or when they go to nurse their newborns and there are issues.  She has noticed color cancer as well, but breast cancer is the front runner for our area.

It can be a pretty rough job, particularly when you come across a friend or co-worker.

I don't know how warm it is where you are, but it still hasn't warmed out of the 30's Fahrenheit from Bellingham north. Pair that with how much snow fell on Wednesday, and there is still a lot of snow and slush around.

Topped out at 40 today.  All of the areas that I shoveled before the snow/ice on Thursday are finally clear as of this afternoon, but otherwise still lots of snow around.

Continue to be encouraged by the long range GFS, not a great pattern, but not a terrible one. Hoping for a February/March 2020 type of late winter.

I ended up with a sub 40 day at 39/31. It probably helped that there is still a decent amount of slushy ice below my thermometer and it doesn't receive any sunshine this time of year. At 8am it was 32 degrees with light rain. No telling what EUG got since it appears to be broken.

With a high of 42F today, it was the first day in 9 days to get above 40F. Not too shabby for January.

What's amazing is that even before any possible torching on the horizon, my average temperature for this January of 34.8F is still warmer than the 34.3F from February 2019. I imagine I'll probably end up a couple degrees warmer than my coldest January in 2017 unless things get really torchy at the end of the month.
