That's good. I started really packing away for retirement about 2 years ago. Later than I should have, but better late than never. I don't really care if I ever retire, I know at some level I will always be doing something, but my hope is to be in a position in 10-15 years where I can do something I really enjoy. I took a new job about two years ago, it was a big pay increase (Yay, barely keeping up with inflation!), but it's just turned into a job job. But I can't really complain.
Both have good jobs now but they are also still paying off debt they accumulated with us over the last few years. I would probably just let it slide but my wife is very insistent on holding them to their word. My son who works at Boeing is also investing at least half his salary into IRAs because he did the calculations and knows its best to build up investments early and let time work for you over the next 40 years. I wish we had done more of that in our early 20s.
Also, I wasn't implying your kids are freeloading. I know they are not. One of them works at Boeing I understand, probably makes more than me. The world is tough to navigate as a young person, some people never figure it out. Sometimes it seems like things are intentionally confusing. In many ways technological advancement has made our lives much more stressful and unsatisfying.
Yeah, I don't care if my kids live with me after high school as long as they are in school or working. They'll have to contribute though. I'll probably still be up here or in an even more rural/isolated area by then, so they might not want to hang around too long. Once they are out of high school, they are on their own financially though.
But, I see my wife and her parents haven't fully cut the cord and she's 35. Her car was in their name as recently as a couple years ago. I brought it up and they transferred the title to me... lol
