March Weather in the Pacific Northwest

No joke. Twenty years from now it will be fifteen years since PDX broke the 108 degree plane. Seems like it was just yesterday.

They are actually expected to break it 20 times in the next five years alone. Intellicast had a thing about it.

I packed my downstairs thermometer and my upstairs one just quit...I feel so naked and alone without any knowledge of what it is currently right outside my house...might have to sleep in my truck tonight so I can monitor the temp that way!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Its 50 at SEA... assume nothing interesting is happening tonight.   Except for more drizzle.

That's somewhat true, but even in the West demand is much lower proportionally for rural properties compared to city areas. At least in most places.

Here in CO, we've seen the majority of our counties lose population over the past 20 years, while the Front Range urban corridor has exploded with a huge influx of people.

Here in Nebraska, the vast majority of farms are either owned by big companies or contracted to big companies for ethanol or feed. Small farms still exist, but they're harder to come by. That's why every time I go to a Farmer's market here I make a point to buy some corn to support them.

The GFS just gets deeper and colder.   The 00Z run would likely mean some c-zone snow here on Sunday night.

There have been huge differences and wild swings for Sunday and Monday for several days... but it really feels like the GFS is blazing the trail and the other models are floundering.    I now join Jesse in being mildly impressed with the GFS lately.    I was wrong.

No... it seems inevitable after the 00Z GFS. I am almost sure there is going to be a big change on the 00Z ECMWF which has already been caving slowly.

So dot was right in possible more snow? Or should I remove the stud tires

Dude... are you planning to run out immediately if it snows for a couple hours and drive around?

Its not like roads are going to be snow covered for days in Bothell.  It will melt right after it stops falling if it happens.    It will be April.    The DOT decision was for people going over the passes.

Do people in the lowlands bother with studded tires?

Do people in the lowlands bother with studded tires?

I guess its very important to some people.    :)

I thought studded tires were mainly for people who have to routinely travel over the passes.

I’m surprised how troughy the models are right now given higher frequency forcings that hand favored ridging over the last several years.

Maybe we really have turned a corner already..

The GFS is incredibly wet over the next 2 weeks.

And stupid cold east of the divide and through the Midwest forever.

Not too bad of a GFS run tonight.  Starting to look blockier and colder again.  The 0z ensemble is really sharp on the coming cold shot now.

GFS ensemble is pretty sold on the Easter trough. Trending a bit cooler in the LR as well.

I was almost starting to worry on that trough.  Looks like it's really showing up strongly now.

Bummer!  I have two thermometers with outdoor sensors that read inside of the house and then my mercury thermometer mounted outside.  I just restored an old weather station (adding some modern upgrades) that I will be mounting on the wall this weekend so that will give me 3 thermometers in the house.  I should be good!

I will post some pictures of the weather station this weekend.  It's really cool!

Good news with the deeper trough... Monday and Tuesday now looks quite dry and pleasant with northerly flow.   Those days are much drier than on the 12Z run which featured a warm front parked over us.

It's amazing how cold / deep troughs bring such pleasant weather compared to flat riding or shallow troughing.  I'm already sick of the pattern we've been in the past few days.  Give me frosty nights, a bit of graupel / wet snow in cold afternoon showers, sunny periods, etc any day compared to this.

Monday-Wednesday are actually dry for us up here on the 00Z ECMWF. Huge improvement with the deeper trough.

I think its say to safe now that we are not following 1951 locally.   Here is April 1951 in my area.   What a month!

The first rain of the month fell on the 18th... and only 6 days with precip.
