Eugene made it into the mid-30s this morning. They even pulled off a -1 departure yesterday somehow.

PDX pulled off a -1 yesterday too. I love weather periods where even our “warm” stretches are near to below average.

12z GFS trended a notch cooler with the Sunday/Monday trough.

 

Looks like the cold trough will be followed by mild rain mid-late week, then a cooler/more variable pattern in the LR has been creeping into focus.

That was when we had the very late snow in NE Oklahoma. Also the Greensburg tornado a month later, and I was caught in a major snowstorm in Wyoming in May 2007 on my way back to Oregon for summer break.

Awesome stuff, man. I saw you mention 2007 last night, which is when I went back and checked the records and sure enough, that’s the year I was thinking of. It snowed an inch here on April 6/7th that year, as well.

 

It was a Niño/+QBO winter, so a bad DJF analog, but it also had a big pattern change in Feb (different to 2018 but similar timing). Then the cold shots continued across much of the country in March/April.

 

This sort of feels like a “crossing of paths” between the two years as the seasons change and the ENSOs relax under solar minimum conditions.

The Pacific pattern is reorganizing, so definitely not a bust by any means. As for the Atlantic pattern..lol nope. Just the same gradual, incremental degradation off the 2001-06 thermal maximum and corresponding slow-creep of the cold vortex into the middle latitudes.
