December 2018 Weather in the Pacific Northwest

Was just about to make the topic, thanks. Let's see if the south valley can break their pathetic, 28 year streak without a White Christmas. Hell, any appreciable cold, even with BSF, would be interesting at this point.

28 years? That doesn’t seem right.

Seems like there had to be a pattern that left them with snow on the ground on Christmas over the last 28 years. Maybe not.

Nah, 1990 was their last one.

Snow isn't that common in Eugene on any given day though, so I'm not sure why it's a big shock.

I guess maybe because the last decade hasn’t exactly been a snow drought for the south valley. At least no more so than for any other area. They have had some decent events. I guess none happened to line up around Christmas.

Sure, but if you took any  other random day on the calendar in mid-winter, I'm not sure a 28 year snow drought would really stand out all that much, but with it being Christmas Day it just feels like a bigger deal.

As one example off the top of my head, I''m pretty certain that January 22 hasn't had any measurable snowfall or snow on the ground since 1982 here, probably longer for Eugene. There are a number of other days like that too.

Not much accumulated. Roads are still wet, must be 33 degrees out there. But about 0.20" on grass and a bit less on cars.

Since 1:00 it has gotten much thicker out there and now a road accumulation. I'll have to take another measurement sometime later.

NWS thought the heaviest would be before midnight. Not here!

There is at least 3+ inches since my last pictures. It dipped into the upper 20's and started snowing again. I will take more shots pretty soon.

For my first measurable snow this is actually a pretty good one.

I sure hope this dry trend don't last all week because we need some real storms for the mountains in a bad way. There is the least amount of snow over here in the okanogan highlands then I've seen in 7 years. All the rain that parts of Washington got really did nothing for us as most of the rain just went back in the ocean.

We come from the land of the ice and snow.

Finally got a nice clearing on my big piece of land which is about 3 miles north of my cabin property. Alot of work to do alone!!! Pretty amazing how much more it snows on this property compared to my cabin. Last year max depth was about 40 inches at cabin on march 1 and at this property there was 57 and elevation is only 300 feet more here. I chose this spot also because it's a north facing slope and that is a huge factor for keeping snow on the trees and ground. Yes I'm a huge snow freak lol.

Had a very cool happen lastnight as i was leaving my property. A bull moose walked out of the woods about 30 yards in front of my truck!! I've seen every animal there is to see in the woods but nothing compares to a moose. There so big it almost looks out of place. I had a horse that was 18.5 hands tall and this moose was bigger. Amazing animal.

The 12Z ECMWF shows a warm conveyor belt of rain approaching the coast by next Sunday afternoon just like the 00Z run... basically dry for the next 8 days.

Looks like the trough will actually move through by next Monday which should lower snow levels again.

Just gets me thinking even though my wife would never live out there. How much is the land out there? She is into tiny houses currently, perhaps I meet her halfway. She get a tiny house and I place it here!
