Have we officially stuck a fork in the chance for anymore lowland snow for the Seattle area this winter? I mean, I wouldn’t say no, but it’s not going to happen, right?

Snow has stopped here, waiting to see if that secondary energy produces anything before I go out and measure. Looks like a decent amount of new snow in the past 90 minutes though, just eyeballing it I would say its probably around 1.5" in that time, maybe 2".

It was pretty nice when we were down in McMinnville a couple weeks ago. Partly sunny a little breezy and low 50s. We even stopped at the old Lafayette Locks on the Yamhill River on the way home. I never realized that river had enough of a gradient to need locks. Apparently it was designed to get lumber and agriculture from the McMinnville area down to the Willamette and eventually Portland. I wonder how that area fared in the June 2009 thunderstorm outbreak.5E810E56-2D68-4B1E-8A26-8E554142BDA4.jpeg

Summer ☀️ grows while Winter ❄️  goes

Yep, almost all of the wildfire ignitions occur on a handful of days every summer -- usually when there is elevated convection with a ton of lightning. Then they smolder and wait for an offshore wind event while the firefighters try to squash as many of the baby fires as they can before the next windy/dry day. In the September fires the offshore winds can do both the triggering and the blow up, but often they are blowing up old lightning strikes from whatever elevated convection day we had in back July or August.

Somewhat counter-intuitively, wet spring conditions are somewhat correlated with worse fire seasons because of the extra fuel buildup which dries out in summer. Especially in grassy places like eastern WA.

I believe water and snowpack do have a bit of say over the length of the 'window' of dry season length, but if you're using an 'acres burned' metric like most do, it comes down to weather patterns. Even a wet June won't save you. I saw a talk once that was focused on Idaho showing that the lag between snowpack melt out and extreme fire danger could be as little as 2-3 weeks. So by the time you get to late July, it doesn't matter when you melted out in most places.

Yes, although last year was not bad here because we had rain through June and some of the Mtns still held snow at least through May. The shortened hot season helped. The year before that resembled the scenario you described.

Garfield County/Pomeroy, WA:

2023-2024 Snowfall totals: 14.3 inches

Pretty boring occlusion-related frontal precipitation here in NYC. Saw some moderately heavy wet snow as a 48/10 environment wetbulbed itself down to a 34F thumping of around half an inch of slop on some guy's Mazda.

Not that the folks here even noticed. Not one single mention of a snowflake or some damp lightbulb... And they trucked on through the commute like not a thing in the world was out of order. What a contrast!

Considering their lack of snow this year that surprises me a bit. They didn’t see their first accumulating snow till February this year and that was less than half an inch.

It snowed here 36hrs after a high of 81°F last month. Whacky winter.

Cold/dry advection usually shuts down precip quickly out here as well. Haven’t seen accumulating snow from a cold front in at least 7-8 years, and today was no exception. Sunny with a dry wind was the result.

Measured an inch and a half. 12" now for March. Actually moves pretty high up on our March list. Right in that 2nd tier now with 2017 and 2018 (And slightly ahead of 2019, behind the epic 2012.

Maybe the Uber driver was just really lame.

Sounds like a horrible place to live…Everyone should be taking pics of that Mazda! Up close, far back, inside windshield shot…What is wrong with those people!! You should have written this on that car!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Can confirm the confirmation.  Sloppy white rain business in SE PDX trying its lil heart out to stick on non road surfaces

In other news, it also snowed a couple inches just north of Gasquet International Airport this morning
