Dang looks to stay so cool overall. It’s a ways off but I believe PDX’s latest first 60 was 3/30/2011…

I'm interested in that trough the middle of next week, looks like a nice variable early spring pattern which will continue to build snow pack and potentially pad my snow totals.

What's your snow total for the winter now?

It stands at 63.7".

If we can make it to 75", I will have to move this winter ahead of 2016-17 as the best since I have lived here... That winter had some really satisfying heart of the winter action, but this winter had our coldest November since I've been here, snowiest November, 2nd coldest February, 2nd snowiest February, already closing in on 2nd snowiest March... It's just been a great run. Our mean temp through the first 8 days of March has been 32.8, obviously that will go up significantly by the end of the month, but we have a great shot at a sub-40 March mean, which has only been done 12 times since 1938, and if we have something below 39 for the month then we are in top 5 territory. Still a long way to go.

About 2 hours ago I heard the loudest thunder that I can remember here since fall of 2019. Honestly couldn't even remember the last time I had heard any here between now and then. We got about 5 minutes of heavy/slushy hail that turned everything white and then BOOM. My girlfriend said she was able to see the lightning on the east side of town. A fellow ex-Texan coworker and I had a good giggle thinking back on what hail meant there!

It actually snowed here for about 15 minutes with huge flakes.  Sitting at a pretty incredible 36 right now.

We had some really loud thunder here yesterday.  Pretty dynamic pattern we're in right now.  I really like how the nights keep finding a way to freeze as well.

What?  Literally nothing happened today.

Update... it looks like I might have accidental hid my own post.    Andrew has been saying it starts snowing every evening right on cue and I replied to his post about snow at Silver Falls with "right on cue".

Fascinating to see the houses on the hill with so much land and no doubt spectacular views of the Sound.

Got down to 28 this morning. Looking like tonight might be the last freeze of the season.

highly unlikely this will be the last.  Years like this almost always have at least a few in April.  We can even get them in May sometimes.

Looks like that band of precip is going to completely miss my area.   Its been totally dry here today except for a 5-minute rain/snow shower around dawn.    I was expecting the activity today to be much more convective in King County but I think it was muted by extensive mid-level clouds which kept the temps cool.

Not sure. Some things definitely changed with the update last year. I’m not sure if it’s the case for anyone else but I have no ability to delete posts, for instance.

Anyway here’s how the PM access looks on my end, at least on mobile. The mail shaped icon opens it up.

1945 was the start of the PDO flip but despite a troughier pattern compared to the previous couple years, 1945-46 was more of an interior Western winter that was pretty mediocre for WA/OR.

1946-47 was a pretty good winter for most of the West and had fairly regional snow events in the PNW in mid November, mid January, and the end of January. Really good winter from Olympia-north. Also a big winter in the SW and southern Plains.

1947-48 was a NE-centric winter for the first half and then flipped to very troughy (not too snowy though) in the PNW in the 2nd half of the winter and that spring, which really marked the turn into the deep -PDO phase that dominated the next decade. The cold/wet spring in 1948 also really contributed to the massive snowmelt floods on the Columbia and Fraser Rivers in late May.

I think there was a terrible flood on the methow too in 1948.

EPS is going for PNA, EPO, and NAO all minus as we get into week 2.  Very likely going to yield more freezing mins for the lowlands.  I'll be at 68 if it freezes tomorrow morning.
