February Snowfalls 2/10-2/12, Part III & IV

4" overnight in the first real dump of snow at my location that wasn't ripped southwest by the wind.

 

Clear and cold now. 24°.

This place is DEAD! Woke up to new snow... Looks like maybe between 2-3" here in Glenhaven... Not really interested in going out and measuring at this point. 30*F. Beautiful though after everything had melted off the trees yesterday afternoon.

1/10/17 was actually not a bigtime event in the central and south valley. Mostly rain in Monmouth and all rain in Springfield.

 

Last great event both places had was early Feb 2014.

Yes, though 12/14/16 was a pretty significant snow event in the Central valley. Salem and Silverton both had 5". Eugene/Springfield just had a big ice storm with that. 

 

So yeah, we've lacked the widespread events, but we've had events. Massive widespread snow events are really not that common. I can think of only a handful that affected Portland, Salem, and Eugene on the same day over the past 15-20 years.

I remember getting over 3 inches of snow with sleet and freezing rain on top 12/24/17 into the 25th, while the west side of the metro area was mild and wet the whole time. I also had consistent snowpack for almost a week in February 2018 with almost 7 inches on the ground by the end. We do have a lot of microclimates in the region.

The long range GFS still maintains some cool troughing, but they become increasingly transitory with 1-2 periods of shortwave ridging in between. Certainly would remain cool overall, but much more of a typical late winter early spring pattern with a couple nice days thrown in the mix.

5.2" fell from this event. About 2" last night and 3.2" this morning. The yard measures 8-9".

 

Now at 27" for the season and 11.5" for February. First above normal month in almost a year. Signature updated on all that info.

Feel like I just spent a week in Vegas and won at every table except the last table ( Mondays storm) !!! Being on that HIGH for a week is exhausting especially with the erratic sleep! Finally slept through the night . Time to recharge and get some chores done. Just tried to clear downspout north side of house and the whole gutter is one long piece of solid ice with snow on top....denied

I still can't get over what a pathetic bust yesterday's storm turned into. The Cascades were supposed to get several feet of snow and Santiam Pass ended up with a meager 8".

If we were looking at definite snow chances coming up I would be all for it, but drippy cold rain that we are looking at now just doesn’t make me very enthusiastic. Let’s get the sun and warm temps going.

It was a lot of fun while it lasted!

I'm not thrilled about these 'in-between' temps where we are still well below normal, but not cool enough for snow. 40 and rain is just yucky. At least I'll be heading to Spring Training in two and a half week! 

Hopefully the family property just past Keechelus Lake will be accessible soon so I can do some more snowmobiling ALL THAT POWDER!!!!

It feels like Northern parts of Whatcom County might hang on to low level NE flow through the weekend... setting up for a snowy week/weekend. I could be wrong but i’ve seen this stuff linger much longer than anticipated before.
