Just some final thoughts about the past week:

 

I LOVED IT!!!!!

 

About the only negative thing I could think of was waking up on Tuesday morning to see most of the snow had fallen from the trees--and I'm getting tired of the Poulsbo snow plow replacing my shoveled snow with street slush.

 

But I am up for another round next week, albiet not as significant as we just saw.  But I will take 4 inches of mother nature's best with a smile.

Euro is almost showing the same amount of snow for me as it did with Mondays system when I got 5 inches, hmmm... thanks Tim!

Just checked security cams at home... trees are all clear of snow now. I think it was windy. Snow looks compacted and mushy

Fv3 has no credibility

The fv3 was the closest of the bunch with snow depths over here. It showed like 21 inches here by Tuesday night 4 days before and i had 26 on ground but 36 fell.

Might be more realistic if you have some elevation, but it loves to show mass amounts of snow down to sea level

I'm really surprised Snowwizard is not posting more. Covington area still did well despite not having as much snow the last day of the storm. 

 

Maybe some good model runs will get him back in here.

Obviously the long range GFS is an outlier...The pattern change keeps getting pushed back on the ensembles now...No major warm up until the 27th... And the operational is pretty close to the mean until about the 25th.

It's what made this winter so bizarre with how little the models showed clown range eye candy throughout the first half of the winter.

KENNEWICK, WA - "An estimated 1,600 dairy cows died in the Lower Yakima Valley during blizzard conditions over the weekend and Monday.

 

“Absolutely heart-breaking” was how Kimmi Devaney of the Dairy Farmers of Washington described the loss.

 

Dairy farmers who had been in the business their entire lives said they had never seen anything like the weather that hit areas near Grandview and Sunnyside between the Tri-Cities and Yakima, Devaney said.

 

“People were expecting some snow. But not one was expecting it as bad as it was,” she said.

 

At Sunny Dene Ranch about eight miles south of Sunnyside, co-owner and veterinarian Bill Wavrin said he had 30 inches of snow, 44 mph winds and temperatures that fell to 18 below zero.

 

“It was just unbelievable,” he said. “ It’s nothing you would have thought.”

 

“There were just some terrible things about the storm,” he said, calling it a 100-year event."

What could they have done to protect their livestock in this situation? Not familiar with precautions farmers take to protect the herd. Sad story

As usual, I'm afraid he set his expectations too high (even with how well his area did this month) wanting endless snow/cold.

 

I'm sure in retrospect he'll be able to appreciate the historic nature of this month, but he's probably still bummed about not scoring as much with the final storm and watching his snow melt.

Yea. Still plenty of snow down there. Just made a drive on hwy 18. Everything is snow covered still, just a bit slushy. He probably wanted 3 feet!

I'm back.  I just needed to step back for a couple of days and catch my breath.  In spite of not doing as well as some places with the Monday / Monday night snow event I still have several inches on the ground in what is an absolutely amazing month.  In a bit of irony the temperatures IMBY were actually colder Monday night and Tuesday than many places that got lots of snow.  This is the first time I've seen a sustained period of freezing rain mixed with snow.  The snow that was mixed in actually accumulated a little bit and covered everything with a hard plate of snow.  Near my house there's a bridge that goes over highway 18 and I could literally see just a mile up the road there were major snow accumulations going on.  I have never seen the line so close, but fail to get here.

 

Anyway...next week is looking increasingly interesting so it's time to get down to business again.  I have also been working on a system to rank the best Februaries ever recorded in this area so I will be posting the results of that soon as well.  I think the system I have come up with will pretty definitively rank the top Februaries for the Puget Sound Lowlands in order.  This one is certainly in the running for top honors!

10 consecutive days with 1" or more snow cover, 10 consecutive max temps below 40, 11 consecutive lows of 32 or below.  Wow!

I'm curious on people's thoughts for how the heavy snow cover may effect the temperature of the east wind that is likely to blow in some areas tonight.  Snow cover is so heavy up the valleys from here I can't imagine it not having a chilling effect.

When i called the nws couple days ago to tell them about the thunder snow we got to talking about how close we were to a 100nyear snow event if that low would of came in 100 miles south. He also said more snow is most likely coming to the lowlands. It was a fun conversation.

Snow has settled and got very solid with 20 inches on ground and down to 29 degrees.
