May 2020 Weather discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

Euro and the gfs seem to be in agreement that it will only dry out for a few days and some rain returns next week. May is shaping up to be just perfect this year with decent rains and nice sunny weather mixed together. Much better than the last 2 mostly dry years.

I couldn’t agree more. Let’s just hope it keeps up on the models.

12Z ECMWF looks like it wants to build the ridge back in at the end of the run... after a really nice rain event. That would be perfect.

Nobody is obsessing over anything. I did not say anything about the GEFS... the maps are also valuable and its just more information. Even though the GEFS is generally not that reliable overall.

And it does show a break down early next week for a few days when you run the loop.

If the GEFS isn’t reliable, why are you posting it more frequently than the EPS and GEPS combined?

Hi guys, I hope everyone is doing well. Wanted to share with you all my first published paper, out this month in AMS Journal of Climate. I looked at 30 years of lightning data for the western US and associated it with driving weather patterns/meteorological variables (large scale stuff anyway, not derived parameters like CAPE or lifted index or whatnot). Give it a glance if you want!

Congrats brother! I’ll give it a read asap.

May this be the first of many.

Overcast here suddenly. I like it. Gives my eyes a break from that orb in the sky.

Surprisingly warm 70 out here right now and partly sunny.

Been kind of a funky day weatherwise

Coldest May temps in 7-8 years for most places along with some fog, followed by some fairly deep mixing ahead of a fast moving storm which is now dropping widespread rain. Dewpoint actually crashed down to 27 here earlier.

On 05/20/2016 I had 42 for a high with 0.55" precip. Hilltops had white on them.

Impressively cold Spring day. Totally forgot about that one.

I'm in Sisters, OR for a few days and boy is it cold here. Enjoying my coffee inside while it's 25° outside.. Here a couple pics I took of my hike the other day to Peterson Ridge overlook. First pic is North and Middle sister, Second is Three Fingered Jack, third is Mt. Washington, I think... Planning to do Black Butte either tomorrow or Thursday.

Welcome back to the PNW!

I’ve gone camping pretty much every time of the year around here in every weather...even in November up in the cascades. I still enjoy camping in the rain or snow...but my favorite time of year to camp is definitely the summer time when it’s in the 80s.

Same with me, I've gone in the middle of a snow/ice storm before and it was crazy. But I prefer camping in the summer because I like to do lots of outdoor activities.

Yeah, neat setup today. The little shortwave moving through Wednesday looks fairly dynamic too, with potential for another round of chilly low temps in its wake. Then a fast warm up Friday and Saturday.

Nice to see the weather have a bit of a pulse this time of year for a change.

We had much colder lows in May 2012 and 2013, but this morning was probably about the coldest May morning since then.

From NWS Seattle’s FB page...We really need to reset that bottom number to zero this summer!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!
