May 2020 Weather discussion for the PNW

I was living in Stevenson in May 2013.

I bet Stevenson was below 36 on 5/1/13.

Just replanted a batch of lawn in my front yard. Would love some warmth this weekend followed by some cooler, damp days.

Thinking about breaking out the pontoon boat this weekend and hitting a high lake for some fresh trout.

Trillium Lake is my go to spot. Go very early in the morning and you can catch some big lunkers up there.

Our location was really bad at decoupling. Little known fact, most river level locations in the western gorge seem to be. But they really perform during offshore flow episodes.

Boy, am I sure looking forward to this much needed stretch of sunny warmthy summery goodness this weekend. Too much rain the past few days.

Three straight days above 25C here. Probably the warmest I've seen it this early for more than one day.

We had much colder lows in May 2012 and 2013, but this morning was probably about the coldest May morning since then.

The 2013-2018/19 warm cycle (+PMM/+TNH) is gradually fizzling out. Question is, when does it flip for good?

Could happen anytime now.

From NWS Seattle’s FB page...We really need to reset that bottom number to zero this summer!

You’re insane bro.

Yeah... it would be torture to touch 100 degrees for 2 hours once every 3,000 days.    This climate is so torrid.

And then imagine that with a dewpoint in the 40s.

Only hit 49 this morning...10 degrees warmer than yesterday morning. Picked up 0.01” yesterday evening to hit 0.50” for the month.

Euro shows the next system producing roughly 0.2-0.5” of rain from the next system before drying out for a few days. Looks like the gfs also is in agreement with the rain returning early next week still.

Over the last 15 years in Tacoma...the most 90+ days we’ve had in one year was 5. Only 1 95+ degree day in that timeframe (103 on 7/29/09). Getting extreme heat even less common here near the sound...but even away from the water there’s never too many days above 90 in the summer and even then it’s never too humid.

Wow, even here at 1600’ in the foothills we’ve had several days the past decade In the 95-98 range. I would say we’ve probably averaged around 5-10 90+ days though in a year like 2011 we didn’t have any.

Some years we don’t have any 90+ days other years we have 4 or 5. Living near the water is a huge plus in the summertime...big drawback during the winter.

I imagine you have very pleasant summers there. We topped out at 94 last summer. Last year was probably fairly close to a typical summer up here. We only had a few 90+ days. I moved here at the end of summer 2011, so most of the summers have been much warmer than average. We were under contract on the house throughout that summer, and it was very chilly up here most of that summer when I would come up for the inspections and such, the warmest weather of the year was right after we moved up here in September.

May 2011 was the coldest May on record up here. 53.3/38.9 average for the month. A 47/35 day on the 26th.

8 sub-50 highs in May...Pretty impressive.

May 2013 was wet overall. Very warm and dry first half of the month, very wet 2nd half of the month with the month's all-time record min max on 22nd with a high of 41. We had wet snow falling that morning.

Today in 2013 started a 5 consecutive day stretch in thunderstorms. Stretches like that are rare. It almost happened again in July 2015, I recorded 8 t'storms between July 5th and 14th that year. The only other times Klamath Falls has seen ones like that were in 1998 and 2009.

The best storms were on May 7th and 8th. And probably the wettest too. There were spotter reports of around an inch of rainfall over the course of 1-2 hours those afternoons. Of course numbers at KLMT may have been different.
