May 2020 Weather discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

I'm in Sisters, OR for a few days and boy is it cold here. Enjoying my coffee inside while it's 25° outside.. Here a couple pics I took of my hike the other day to Peterson Ridge overlook. First pic is North and Middle sister, Second is Three Fingered Jack, third is Mt. Washington, I think... Planning to do Black Butte either tomorrow or Thursday.

Excited for this first real heat spell of the warm season. Going to have to head out to the peninsula again this weekend...set up some tents and a campfire on the water. Can’t wait!

You people are insane. Lol.

That’s what I’d do for a cold trough or storm system. Not a stupid heat wave.

I’ve gone camping pretty much every time of the year around here in every weather...even in November up in the cascades. I still enjoy camping in the rain or snow...but my favorite time of year to camp is definitely the summer time when it’s in the 80s.

Alright, respect. At least you play all fields.

me and my brother actually went camping up in greenwater a couple years ago in January...ended up getting 4 inches of snow and some freezing rain accumulation overnight. As long as you have the right gear you can do anything...it’s just expensive to get all the proper winter gear.

You just cannot accept that our weather is different.

This "heat wave" will probably result in mid 70s by the water where is he camping with low humidity and chilly nights.   That will be extremely pleasant for camping and the best weather of the year so far.

That is enjoyable weather by your standards as well and better than camping in damp, cold weather.    But you hone in on the term "heat wave" as we use the term... and immediately change the meaning to your most horrific weather with temps in the upper 90s and dewpoints in the 80s.   This makes no sense and sounds very silly to people in the PNW.

Low of 34 this morning. My wife was complaining about my snoring so I went out and slept on the porch, felt lovely.

Of course I think we can have both heat and storms, just not 100 degree weather or 50 degree showers in July... :P

The colder and wetter the better when it comes to camping. 35 with sleet is my favourite. Though freezing rain would probably be awesome too. The thought of camping in a 70 degree May sunshiney heat wave literally makes me puke. No thanks. I’m gonna stay quarantined in my basement bunker.

Do you camp in a tent? It can get pretty uncomfortable when it’s in the 80s, tent cooks like a little oven if it’s in the sun. 50s/60s are my ideal camping temp.

Luckily we either camp high in the mountains or on the coast, so that seems to be the most common high temp range, even in the summer.

I haven’t been camping in years. But when I did I preferred warm sunny weather. . The tent cools off instantly in the evenings anyways.

It will probably be in the upper 90s with suffocating humidity along the shores of the 50-degree Puget Sound for TacomaWaWx this weekend... completely insane that someone would want to be camping in that nightmarish weather.     Who camps in a heat wave?   Phil is so right.    We have the exact same climate as DC.    :)

Chilly morning for May. Hit 36 here with some light frost. Even PDX appears to have hit 39, which would be their coolest May temp in several years if verified.

Low 20's again here just like yesterday. Not quite record but pretty close. In 1959 was 20 degrees.

Who lays in the tent at 4pm though?

Well even if it gets up into the 80s or 90s during the day at nighttime it cools off enough to get sleep comfortably around here outside. I pretty much basically use my tent for sleeping at night not so much during the day.

The GFS ensembles are actually pretty variable. Someone just has a new thing they are obsessing over now.

attachicon.gifCA846F63-DDF3-4C8D-ACB2-D308712EA499.png

Nobody is obsessing over anything.   I did not say anything about the GEFS... the maps are also valuable and its just more information.   Even though the GEFS is generally not that reliable overall.

And it does show a break down early next week for a few days when you run the loop.
