Humans were resilient but average life expectancy was 30 and you died from a cold and nature was ruthless.   It took a long time for the population to build up to a sustainable number allowing humans to survive all the hardships so that we are here today.   Individual lives were very tough.   They didn't know any different though... it was just the way it was.

They experienced different challenges. If one survived early childhood you could live a decently long life. Maybe not by todays standards, but there were people in their 50s,60s, and 70s back then. The life expectancy was so low due to high childhood mortality. Of course if you got cancer, heart disease, a bad infection, etc... It was over.

Just had a pretty heavy groupel shower here in Mountlake Terrace hit in the middle of recess. Showed my class the radar before we went out and told them to watch for “dippin’ dot” snow to start during recess so that was perfect timing to make me look like a genius. 😅

Too bad you didn't have more lead time, then you could have gone to winco and bought the class dip'n'dots if it happened.

Of course we are also talking about thousands of years ago... but more recently I read in detail about people making the trek along the Oregon trail.   What an ordeal that was.

I think the lowest 850s on record for SEA was -22 in Feb 1956.

Sitting in a motel room just north of Little Rock, AR

Expecting scattered severe storms overnight.

I avoided snow all the way here, but now have to deal with this before I head to TN in the morning

By then things were already pretty f*cked. But humanity during the times of tribes and small groups lived better than we tend to give them credit for.

Can you imagine the life early settlers who had to be outside... must have been so brutal.   We are all lucky to be living now.

My 3x great grandfather came to Butte in a covered wagon in 1867.  And Butte is routinely the coldest spot in MT.  At the time it was merely a mining camp with a hundred or so people.

One thing I do worry about when the moisture makes it here is the dry dew points eating up the snow before it hits the ground.

2023 - 2024 Cold Season Stats

Total Snowfall - 0.75”

Max Snow Depth - 0.5”

Coldest High Temp - 21 (Jan 13)

Coldest Low Temp - 9 (Jan 13)

Number of Freezes - 51

Sub-40 highs - 12

Highs 32 or lower - 3

12Z ECMWF actually looks like it was pretty close for right now.   With the dry air coming down the Sound right now the radar echoes might nor actually represent measureable precipitation... so the ECMWF might look understated without actually being so.

ECMWF shows that little blob up there right now and says it will actually push to the west and south and spread out.   I think you are going to be good.
