January Weather In The PNW 2024 (Part III) - The Warming Shot

Changeover seems to have dropped below 500ft now based on CC/beam height (and mixing likely below that).

Race between the changeover and the back edge of precip shield.

I left education this last June, and yeah, it's ridiculous. I don't know what your district is like as far as pacing freedom, but for us we couldn't pause for a day and teach about snow, or weather, or something that would relate to what was going on. Nope, we'd have to stick to the guide. Half my class would be missing and the other half physically present but mentally absent. It would not be hard to have some really excellent snow day curriculum on tap that would be great enrichment for those who can/want to take part virtually.

That is such a shame.  Takes the spontaneity out of everything.  Kind of reminds how they did away with the decent homemade lunches at the schools and replaced them with packaged standardized crap.

12Z ECMWF snow with the warm front tomorrow.

@ShawniganLake is probably going to get a bunch more.

Looks like another 6-8”.  I would expect pretty low ratios so probably I’d bet more in the 4-6” range.

snow is letting up here now.  There was 6” when I left home.  So I would guess we end up with 7-8” today.  Pretty well within what was modeled.

Elevation?

Was just surprised that we switched over before PAE. But it looks like it was only a few minutes difference. My location at Shoreline is at 400 feet.

February has been the big month since 2016. I suspect that’ll reverse, though given how long the January curse lasted, who knows? 😂

You're probably right now that January came through. However, since '16 February as stated above has been pleasant. Will we lose February and gain January now? Doubtful, The earth has a memory more sharp than we do. I'm still investing in February. If I'm wrong? I'll find what seasoning goes good with crow. 😝

Dr. No starting to look like Dr. Wrong. Change to snow matches RGEM timing.

The all mighty might not be 100% accurate? Perfect!!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

I have a small forested area to the northeast of my house that protects me a bit from the worst of the outflow winds. So I was not expecting it to be as strong as it is.

Basically a near-total whiteout once you get to the more exposed areas of town. Drifts are building up very rapidly.

Saw a reliable report of 16” out in Chilliwack.  They could realistically hit 20”.

Chilliwack always seems to do well. Even when Abbotsford is skunked by the outflow. That part of the valley can get some pretty nasty ZR sometimes, though.

28 degrees with a solid half inch of ice coating everything now. Looks like some pretty heavy rain is about to move in, and I don't think we are going to thaw before then. Reeeeally happy we have underground power lines here.

I am so envious.  I thought about moving up there so many times several years back.
