February 2024 Weather in the PNW

Recommended Posts

Looked it up... it was the earliest final warming event on record in 2016.     Not sure if it was a cold spring in the Midwest and NE that year but definitely not out here.

Didn't cut it off... that is all that displayed on my phone without scrolling.   And of course not the point.   A weenie in early February 1962 might assume the world was ending but it wasn't.  ;)

Wow, 8" snowstorm at SeaTac from Feb 28th-March 1st. After a low of 18 as well. I didn't realize there was a second event that winter after the blast in January.

That winter followed by 1962-63 was pretty great. Also didn't realize there were two blasts in Jan 1963, both look really nice.

Here is the bottom of the window... from 64 degrees to 7 inches of snow at SEA.  Hopefully the cold weather fans didn't pack up and move out of disgust in early February!

That Feb 1962 blast looks really impressive, some snow going into the cold as well. This is from the Oregonian on 2/24/1962. Salem had 5.4" of snow that day. Then Salem and Hillsboro had a low of 17 on the 26th, PDX got to 20 twice, Eugene got down to 18. And then late Feb and early March had 8"+ at both Seattle and Olympia

Yeah, both of those winters were littered with blocks and retrogrades. 1961-62 also had an anafront snowstorm in late November in SW OR, a regional modified backdoor snow/arctic event in mid December, and an extension on that late February airmass with some super cold onshore flow in early March. We also had snow with the arctic front going into that airmass down here on February 23, Salem was the big winner with 5-6".

We're due for a March blast. 1989/1955 redux anyone?

March 1951 was pretty interesting too!

And then April followed with rain on only 3 days in Seattle.

Ended up with 57/43 for Feb 1 vs 60/50 for Jan 31 IMBY.  Slow cooling.  Seems like everything is slow right now.  The warmup out of the cold was slow as well.

Looks like Silver Falls had a high of 69 on 2/1/1962. Then their latest single digit lows on record with an 8 and 9 on the 26/27th. The early March snow event was big too, with another decent event the 9-11th of March too.

06z looks decent in the believable range for mountain snow, even a lowland snow shower event. Not as good for Washington Cascades though

Where it belongs.

Starting to feel pretty confident that I can count out any spring freeze and that I can get a head start on the remainder of my lawn reconfiguration rather than waiting for April.

We are having our lawn re-done this spring... missed the opportunity last fall.   Definitely waiting for April though.

re-done? if you want it perfect lay down a layer of sand and plant grass on that.

We let it go dormant in 2021 and its never been the same since.   Time to start over and make the grass area smaller as well.
