March 2024 Weather in the PNW

Recommended Posts

The EPS continues to have the "prettiest" trough with the upcoming cool down.  The other models get pretty messy with it.

I think Mt Si is higher than the highest peak in the Oregon coast range. Yet it has no snow.

I was obviously talking about WA.  You can look at the records yourself.  We did have a dry period last year, but in the end even it ended up normal.  All others quite wet.

Guessing maybe he is referencing all the discussion we have had about Mt. Si.

But that is the view have in North Bend!

Pretty nice day up on Mount St Helens in terms of views, although terrible for everything else. 40 degrees at the summit at 8:20am, absolutely no refreeze of snow. Not a cloud in the sky, although there was so much blowing snow at times that the visibility would get low, mountain-forecast was calling for 15mph gusts which was absolute BS, it was gusting 30-40MPH at times. Overall a great day though.20240316-104647.thumb.jpg.55339dbc5f4091dba33d608694ee2be3.jpg20240316-104202.thumb.jpg.0e22fc54285cbe760a0af4e1a8b85c4a.jpg20240316-104436.thumb.jpg.b759a6b22d203c32058d1de5b3d48cf3.jpg20240316-103707.thumb.jpg.62b0ed36a10e750d6eabb038db4c6346.jpg20240316-105043.thumb.jpg.6e9ca086f7e1e387b6e3ee24cc6d6ce2.jpg20240316-104538.thumb.jpg.27e078083fac3e11b34c1a923f5842c7.jpg

Good point about the mins not getting cold enough for a refreeze at night.  That is going to be really bad for allowing snow loss this weekend.

Trees look sick here too.   But we have not had any water issues up here since 2014-15.   Both can be and are true.     Lots of mountain snow and winter rain and hot summers.   The sick trees are related to the latter.

I don't create the weather Andrew.    But it is east wind downslope related and it does get cooler as you go west.    I apologize for the geographical reality of my area.

No Andrew.    It's called downsloping.   Not only east wind like PDX...but east wind  downsloping.    Sometimes we are the coldest place west of the mountains and sometimes the warmest.   Sorry that is beyond your ability to comprehend but it's still reality.

I try to keep pretty active despite my old age, anytime it's nice weather I'll go for atleast a couple hikes. Can't pass up a beautiful day like today!

Main reason I pointed out that the snow didn't refreeze is because it's usually much safer when it freezes, less likely for an Avalanche to happen, although you're right about it leading to more snowmelt when it doesn't freeze. Thankfully this pattern coming up should restore all the snow that has melted in this warm stretch.

Coldest temp this winter: -7 Jan 13th

Snow depth at Mount Bachelor (last updated March 27th) 107"

Snow depth at my home (updated March 27th): none

23-24 seasonal snowfall at home (updated March 27th): 84"

Looks like we briefly hit 65. So blessed to be avoiding this heat. Nice to see Jesse out hiking in the heat today, while our favorite warm weather poster just sits around.

72 at SLE. Today's record high is 75. They could do it. Go figure. Yet another record high in a rapidly warming climate. Absolute NIGHTMARE in progress.

Beautiful day at Hells Gate SP. About 60F and mostly sunny skies. Its quiet today compared to the hoards of people who visit in Summer.
