Effective June 1, 2024, I will be the Secretary of the Oregon Chapter of the AMS.
Mark Nelsen has decided to step away from the executive committee, and I won the election between myself and Mike Krejci (runs weather-reporter.com and weathersigma.com (a new model site that is still being worked on) so check out his sites).
Back to civilization now after a successful 12 day climb of North America's tallest peak, Denali, home of some of the most extreme weather on the planet, with my 4 great friends Roger, Matt, Scott, and Aaron. For the first half of the climb we were very lucky with the weather and only needed 9 days to get enough good weather days to acclimatize and summit on the evening of the 20th. After we reached the summit we got about 20 minutes of clear sky -28 degree weather with light wind until a cloud
They’re all just a bag of rats.
For comparison there was the election where Nixon defeated Humphrey, LeMay, and McCarthy. Now there’s a fine kettle of old DC fish! And let’s not forget George Wallace was in there too
Nothing changes.
I would recommend making it a 2 day climb if you're worried about altitude, most people camp at the lunch counter which is a flat area on the mountain with plenty of windbreaker walls for the tents, great place to stay the night to split up the climb and to acclimatize. I've never known anyone who had a problem with the altitude after camping a night to acclimatize.
Although idk if you have backpacking gear, in the case that you don't you could just camp at the Trailhead the night before which is at 5500' which is also plenty high enough to acclimatize assuming you don't have a history of asthma or breathing problems, and then make the summit push in a day which means you'll spend less time exposed to the altitude and will not have problems.
