Jesse
It's pretty hard to believe WA only averages 1700 with the Olympics, Cascades, and Okanogan Highlands. WA has many mountains that are higher than the ones in Oregon. Very diverse topography.Exactly. This. Much of central/eastern Oregon is on a high, volcanic plain, while Washington has more severe elevation extremes throughout due the the carving up of the landscape by rivers, floods and Pleistocene glaciation. Even the Oregon Cascades are much more gentle and rolling, overall, than the Washington Cascades (especially north of Snoqualmie Pass) The mean elevation in the Southern Oregon Cascades especially is really really high, for instance, but the mountains are comparatively gentle on the whole.
