It was a December to remember. If only we didn't piss away Jan and Feb on endless ridging...

They were moderately dull, but could definitely have been way worse. We did manage another modified arctic airmass, and we at least didn't wallow in endless SW flow vomit the way we do in many winters.

I really enjoyed the late February cold snap.

Yeah I think I tend to just set my expectations too high for our winter climate in general.

If you had grown up in the late 90s and early 2000s you would understand how truly awful this climate can be. Imagine 2014-15 every year.

2021-22 is going to end up underrated in 10 years... We won't recognize it's true beauty. Kind of like 2010-11.

Feel safe saying it will be remembered here, given it had the coldest temperatures since the late 1960’s (not to mention multiple significant lowland snowfalls, including a white Christmas).

Yeah no doubt your area did amazing. It absolutely puked snow in central Oregon where I was when that went down but the brunt of the Arctic air just didn’t advect down here. So I cannot relate on the coldest temps since the late 60s. Models showed that Arctic airmass advecting down south and then kind of rugpulled it north a couple days out which I was a bit annoyed about. But it was still some of the most impressive snow I’ve ever seen.

Sadly I only had around 3 inches of snow with that whole event, but that's much better than cold rain. And somehow we had a subfreezing high on the 28th.

There really has been quite the abnormally steep N-S gradient on temperatures in the past year or so. That really hurt the WV when it came to snow last December. It's not always that steep (and when it's not, many parts of the WV can actually get colder than it does here).

All weather is local. December 2013, when Eugene hit -10°F, was nothing terribly special further north. It was cold, but not exceptionally so.

Actually the WV excepting the Portland area did pretty good for snowfall last December, Eugene set a record for snowiest December day with 8 or so inches on the 26th I think, it's just the cold didn't make it here really.

Yeah December 2009 and 2013 had a real back door component.

That basically ties our best day last December (though we had many other snow days). Looks like PDX has really gotten the shaft when it comes to snow in recent years. That will end some day.

The western metro definitely has. PDX itself did quite well in February 2021 at least.

Even then it hasn't been that bad. Feb 2021 had 10+ inches in a lot of spots N and E metro (only 4 inches in my place sadly), Feb 2019 was also not terrible east metro, Feb 2018 saw some spots with a good amount of snow (5 inches in my area around), and 2016/2017 was great here. I just hope the west and south metro can get some of that next year though, I haven't had as much as PDX recently.

Yeah it's been kind of annoying haha. At least we scored in 2016/17, and this winter was surprisingly my snowiest since then. I guess the north and east metro are just a bit snowier in general.

That onshore Arctic airmass was something else. Even though it did not get continental south of Chehalis, the onshore Arctic flow was the coldest since Dec 1990.

18z is full of dry, cold NW flow. Highs in the 50s and 60s, lows in the upper 40s. Juneuary gold and a 2011 throwback for sure.

Yeah, I'm really glad we weren't just stuck with a south wind and cold rain. I think the high of 32 on the 28th was at midnight and it cooled throughout the day.

Right now we're still above average temperature wise for the month in Portland but it probably will go down with this pattern

Not sure the last time this has happened (if ever during the summer??). The entire Yellowstone National Park is now closed due to flooding/rockslides.

I really thought the Columbia would flood pretty seriously this year.  Maybe all of the dams prevented it, but a lot of dams were there in 1948 and it was bad.  Must have been a gradual enough melt off here to avoid it.
