December 2016 Observations and Model Discussion for the Pacific Northwest

This event is over performing cold-wise areas immediately north and west of the gorge at least. Scappoose is pouring rain and 32, dp has been staying near 30 due to the gorge still pumping in cold-dry air. Everything but the highway is a complete mess! I just came off the hill into town and the road was nearly impassable. I have an off-road pathfinder with studs and it was giving me fits.

The Euro bottoms out at -14 for SEA and has a couple of snow chances. Not bad at all.

Best way to get your snow fix is just move to s better location. I know I'm not the only one who has.

Yeah it's getting pretty bad out there. There is another pretty decent looking slug of moisture crossing through the western valley now which could easily give me another .10 - .20" of freezing rain. The trees are not looking good at all.

Cold Season 2023/24:

Total snowfall: 26"

Highest daily snowfall: 5"

Deepest snow depth: 12"

Coldest daily high: -20ºF

Number of subzero days: 5

Ended up with 3.5" of white gold here last night and school was cancelled. Teachers are more excited about snow days than students!

Flurries started at 8:00, picked up to light snow which immediately coated the ground about 9:15, snowed moderate to heavy from about 9:30 to 1 AM, and then kept snowing nonstop till I finally came inside and went to bed at 5 AM.

It was a fantastic night of sledding, snowball fights, snowmen, and long walks through the woods. Couldn't have asked for a better outcome and I'm so glad I stayed up to truly experience it.

Everything is still coated and just now starting to melt a bit. Trees are still caked though as its only 34 degrees and the last shower to move through about 20 minutes ago was wet snow.

0 degrees F 2 meter temp isotherm nearly to PDX on hour 216 of the 12z Euro. Yikes!

Really interested to see the 12z EPS ensembles after that run!

I wish to God I could. A lot of things that just don't add up to doing that. I totally blame myself. I just didn't research this area well enough before we moved here. At first blush you would think this would be a good spot, but there are too many things wrong with the location. No doubt great winters have happened here and in fact faired better than most areas, but it takes specific patterns. Thank God I'm as healthy as an ox so I may be able to live somewhere good before I'm too old to enjoy it. My situations does make for long bouts of melancholia though.

Traveling to where it's snowy just doesn't float my boat either.

Anyone with wxbell care to let me know how snow chances look Sunday-Tuesday for 1500' in Nw oregon?

I don't have weather bell, but they look pretty good. From what I can tell in terms of thickness/850s. I don't see much snow lower than about 1300-1500', but our areas could reasonably expect maybe 1-3" at this point and maybe a little more if we get a little more organized precip.

Maybe a light dusting Sunday morning (925's never drop below 0c) for you then things turn pretty dry but cold until Tuesday afternoon when everyone including the PDX area will see about 2-3" of snow at face value.

At the rate you're going, I'm surprised the schools out there aren't closing early. Probably won't stop for you till later this evening/tonight.

Every Friday is early release... they are done at 1.

Nice.... But will it snow!? I think that is really all most of care about?

A record cold December would be kind of interesting though.

For us 1985 was a super interesting year. Both Feb an Nov over performed to a great degree. More snow than the places usually at the top. It has happened in that and other winters. FWIW we often do well when it really counts....going into long cold waves.
