SilverFallsAndrew
That's another piece that has been missing from mid-winter, aside from the major arctic outbreaks, we have had very few modified arctic air intrusions into the region if you compare to the historical record. Events like early January 2017 or even January 2007 just used to be a lot more common. I really think the late February 2022 airmass would have been able to produce temps similar to those events if it had happened a month sooner. So some of it has probably been due to our colder airmasses being focused so much later in the season. 3 1 Snowfall Precip 2022-23: 95.0" 2022-23: 17.39" 2021-22: 52.6" 2021-22: 91.46" 2020-21: 12.0" 2020-21: 71.59" 2019-20: 23.5" 2019-20: 58.54" 2018-19: 63.5" 2018-19: 66.33" 2017-18: 30.3" 2017-18: 59.83" 2016-17: 49.2" 2016-17: 97.58" 2015-16: 11.75" 2015-16: 68.67" 2014-15: 3.5" 2013-14: 11.75" 2013-14: 62.30 2012-13: 16.75" 2012-13: 78.45 2011-12: 98.5" 2011-12: 92.67" It's always sunny at Winters Hill! Doinko
23 minutes ago, SilverFallsAndrew said: Very true. One of the best winter stretches I've had down here was the first week of January 2017. It was kind of a fail as far as true arctic air went, but we had some modified arctic air slip in and ended up having a very cold low level airmass. A lot of valley locations ended up hitting the mid teens even without snow cover, which set up a nice overrunning event from EUG to PDX on the 7-8th. The events that happened a few days later kind of fade the memory of the previous week for many, but for many areas south of Portland that was the coldest week of that winter. EUG had back to back lows of 13 on the 5th and 6th and then a 29/24 day on the 7th with 4" of snow. Salem bottomed out at 14 on the 6th, and then had a 29/23 day on the 7th. Both locations also recorded sub-freezing highs on 1/13/2017. Eugene would record one on the 14th as well, and this would end up being the last time they had a sub-freezing high. Salem would not record another one until the ice storm of February 2021. However, 1/7/2017 is the last time both locations had a sub-30 high. Neither location has rivaled the lows of 14 and 13 respectively that they achieved on 1/6/17. In fact, if I am not mistaken the last time Salem saw a low in the teens was 1/15/17 and at EUG 1/6/17... Both incredibly long stretches for those locations. I digress... EUG did see a low in the teens this November as well. I think PDX dropped to 17 with that early month airmass. That early month airmass was really nice. I think we had a half inch of snow on the 1st, then some really strong east winds and snow/ice event on the 7th/8th with another half inch. And then here of course the next 10 days were amazing

You are right about Eugene hitting the teens this November, for some reason I forgot about the 18 they recorded on the 19th and just remembered the 20 they had the next day. Wow, that was impressive. At elevation we did really well on New Year's Day 2017. We had a storm total of around 8" from that, and did not see bare ground again until the end of the month. Salem had some light accumulations on the 1st and 2nd too, but there was no appreciable snow cover to aid the lows. The Silverton and Canby areas were hit with some pretty intense snow bands on 1/1/17 which dropped several inches in very localized spots which stayed on the ground for some time as well. Silverton had about 4-5" with that, and then several more inches on the 7th, and maybe another inch as things wound down on the 11th, so they had snow on the ground for several weeks, which is obviously very rare for them. 1 Snowfall Precip 2022-23: 95.0" 2022-23: 17.39" 2021-22: 52.6" 2021-22: 91.46" 2020-21: 12.0" 2020-21: 71.59" 2019-20: 23.5" 2019-20: 58.54" 2018-19: 63.5" 2018-19: 66.33" 2017-18: 30.3" 2017-18: 59.83" 2016-17: 49.2" 2016-17: 97.58" 2015-16: 11.75" 2015-16: 68.67" 2014-15: 3.5" 2013-14: 11.75" 2013-14: 62.30 2012-13: 16.75" 2012-13: 78.45 2011-12: 98.5" 2011-12: 92.67" It's always sunny at Winters Hill! Didn't have amazing CAA, so the highs weren't incredible impressive, but it put up some tremendous lows for having absolutely no snow cover. Omegaraptor
29 minutes ago, SilverFallsAndrew said: That was an amazing and incredibly underrated cold wave. Didn't have amazing CAA, so the highs weren't incredible impressive, but it put up some tremendous lows for having absolutely no snow cover. Eugene had 5 straight sub freezing highs and bottomed out with a low of 7. SLE hit 10 twice. Hard to get much colder than that in the Western Valleys with no snow cover. I understand why people over look it, the total lack of snow, but IMO it's the #2 arctic outbreak of this century for the Willamette Valley, obviously behind December 2013, but I would put it ahead of December 14-16, 2008 because of its duration, even though the 08' event produced fairly widespread snow. The 7/-22 at Sunriver with 1" snow depth is pretty wild.
HuskyMaestro
The last of the snowmen that was built in our neighborhood.
