November 2017 PNW Discussion Thread

Winds seems to have hit a lot earlier than I was expecting in Bellingham.  Got woken up about 4:15-4:30 to a huge gust of wind slamming the side of the house and rattling the windows.  We had a 37mph gust which is pretty big for my house.  I am tucked down in a little hollow on the north side of a hill, so we rarely see the full effects of a windstorm from the south.

Been occasional gusts of wind here, leaves will be taking a tumble today.

I thought the main event happened last night during that first event of wind and rain. Pressure began to rise on the barometer so figured it was done. Winds calm in Federal Way this morning but lots of standing water around the yard. I was delightfully surprised when they upgraded us to high wind warning now!

Got gas for the generator just in case this storm gets some attitude!

Lots of branches coming down now.

That looks like many of the streets around here with the occasional big branch.

I actually saw someone's tarp go flying through the air on the way to work this morning.

I do find it funny that I've seen weather forecasters on the East Coast repeatedly state, "Watch out in the New England states today. Very strong gusts are expected in the 30-35 mph range. There will be a lot of damage and downed trees. Be safe out there!"

While here in the Seattle area, a windstorm with gusts of 50+ is considered routine for November.

To be fair, the trees/forests are a bit different out east.

Eh...

We have several days of 30mph winds from the north that will eat you alive.

Snow events of 4" are common throughout the winter, north of Philly, and the city doesnt shut down.

Everyone from Richmond to Halifax is on notice from December through March for 18"+ snow storms.

Nor'easters bring winds just as bad as anything Storm King would list

We get tornados.

All that bragging aside, I will say that the geographic area that a PacNW storm covers will dwarf anything non-tropical in the Northeast.

Sounds like you’re acclimating.

I woke up, looked northeast, and thought where's the storm?

Looked to the southwest, is that an "eyewall"  ?

Historic amount of leaves on those trees though, it appears. Been since my Grandpappy's Grandpappy was a lad since we've seen that kind of foliage on 11/13.

Is that a power line hanging at a very low height through your yard??

That looks crazy low.

I like the palms... look like northern CA there.   :)

Lol, you've got it backwards man. Only in Seattle is 50mph even considered a "windstorm".

FWIW, just two weeks ago, that October 30th cyclone brought hides between 70-90mph to much of coastal New England, with spotty gusts over 100mph. Those folks would've much preferred a 50mph leaf rustler, I suspect.

Yeah, our wind climo is fickle, but statistically speaking it's definitely higher than SEA's.

IAD (Dulles Intl) has hit 109mph, 79mph, and 74mph (during the cold season) just since 2007, with several mid/upper 60s over that span as well. The highest I can find at SEA is one day with a 65mph gust. Meh..

Models seem pretty boring after this storm. Mountain snow but the lowlands will have seasonal weather with temps a bit above normal here.  Hopefully something good as we get into December.

In the first picture it's a clothesline; it was attached to the oak tree but the oak has started to lean. There are also some low lines that come through the front because the house sits quite a bit higher than the street level.

I grew those palms from seed and they are quite at home in our little extension of California.

Another east west battle!

Of course most of the coast is unpopulated in Washington /BC. 70mph+ gusts are very common out there. A regular occurrence on multiple days every storm season.

I believe it, based on my Hippa Island experience last summer.

Then again, the unpopulated areas around here (namely the ridges to the west) frequently gust above hurricane force through the cold season. Wintergreen hit 115mph last February, I've seen Snowshoe sustained at over 80mph and gust over 125mph on multiple occasions since I started keeping track.

FWIW, I've never been under a high wind warning for gusts to 55mph. That definitely doesn't meet HWW criteria here.

Yeah, I know parts of the OR coast have seen 100+ mph gusts in recent years, and probably WA/BC as well.

Yeah the trees are completely bare right now for the most part. Salem, my location, and Eugene. Haven't been to Seattle or North Bend, WA lately so I cannot comment on those locations.

Windy in the mountains is normal here too. 104mph at white pass just this morning.

Wind has died down and there has been no rain so far during the daylight hours here.    Looking at the radar... that will change soon.

The first thing I notice about this picture are all the leaves still on those deciduous trees!
