December Weather In the PNW

I just made the mistake of looking at the GFS Ensembles.

Yeah, I am profoundly disappointed in recent model trends. We are looking at the mid-way point in our winter with essentially nothing to show for it.

We need a neutral winter in order to get anything worthwhile I feel like. La Niña winters just don’t seem to do it for the Puget Sound lowlands these days.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

'08-'09, '10-'11 and '11-'12 were Nina winters. Last year a lot of Puget Sounders got a big storm in February, even if it melted quickly. Might be more productive to keep whining over and over though.

I wouldn't call 3.5 inches of snow that mostly melts the next day a "big storm" But yeah, whining won't solve anything so it is what it is.

Huge snowflakes here right now... looks just like the decorative snow they have falling every night in Bellevue.    :)

Still no radar.   No idea how long it will last.

And most of this has melted in pea soup fog that formed as soon as it stopped falling.

I have a right to think this ended up being a gross day.    ;)

I’m doing what I can here...washing my cars, whining, not telling anyone that it might snow...Whatever it takes!!

Didn’t you get the forum memo that if you are from Washington (north of Kelso) you are not allowed to say anything negative.

Down to 33 here!

You do seem like a nice weenie!

Thanks! I try to be. And in “real life” I never really complain (or “whine” as our southern friends like to say) about anything. life is good! Just would like a nice snowstorm and for it to stick around for a little while. I still have a gut feeling that February will deliver.

Those are the Portland ensembles but you can change the city in the URL. Nice little group of colder members around the 29th!

That period bears watching IMO.  It's pretty easy to see how that could end up really cold.  The EPS control model has liked the idea of a colder outcome with that.  This is actually a fascinating pattern we are in.  Really no solid cold shots, but a lot of brushes with it.

Death To Warm Anomalies!

Winter 2023-24 stats

Total Snowfall = 1.0"

Day with 1" or more snow depth = 1

Total Hail = 0.0

Total Ice = 0.2

Coldest Low = 13

Lows 32 or below = 50

Highs 32 or below = 3

Lows 20 or below = 3

Highs 40 or below = 9

I'm really liking the chances for the Puget Sound region to score some snow on Christmas Eve.  The models have been consistent in showing numbers good enough and in some cases more than good enough for it.  One thing that will really help us is the easterly breezes expected tomorrow.  That will really dry the air mass out thus adding evaporative cooling to the mix on Christmas Eve.

What do you think the timeframe will be for the precip to begin in the Puget Sound region on the 24th?

You would never even know the possible snow event by reading the nws forecast. Funny how if the gold standard model shows no snow its the only model that's right and if it does show a good chance of snow it has to be wrong!

We come from the land of the ice and snow.

Evaporative cooling with easterly flow is really the only thing making this event look possible. Everything else is very marginal looking at best.
