December Weather In the PNW

There will no longer be any 12z soundings from Alaska, due to NOAA budget cuts. In other words, focus on 00z runs instead, in situations where there are waves or vorts or other energy in and around Alaska. It's a shame. Goes R was an (expensive) step forward but we have taken steps back by eliminating such a useful forecasting tool that cost very little in comparison to Goes R... Oh well.

. Is this for real? Are you sure it's not some other place in west Texas maybe that is progged for more snowfall over the next few days?

It is snowing there.

We haven't had a "major" SSW event since January of 2013.

That's the second longest streak on record, according to this analysis from Dr. Amy Butler.

Several posts on facebook of the snow in Austin from friends and family there.

I have people on the ground.   I can confirm the validity of these reports!

Yeah, one of my coworkers parents live there and said it's the first time they've seen snow there in quite a few years.

First measurable snow since January 2014.

Austin and San Antonio's airports look to set a monthly record for December. They've gotten maybe an inch and their records are both 0.2", LOL.

I already had trouble falling asleep last night. East facing bedroom window with a line drive from the gorge for those winds.

I miss the sound of the east wind eating my house at night when I lived in Troutdale,

24/7 ....seemed like for weeks sometimes. My top gust there was 73mph....took a few shingles as I remember.

I’m excited! UPS just brought my new weather machine. I had two other machines but they died a few years ago. I delayed in replacing them since the weather here in Federal Way just hasn’t been exciting. Last years weather sort of lit my motivation to get another machine. Now, to climb up on my frosty roof to instal the anemometer! Not!

I wish I could justify spending the money on a snow blower

I refuse to buy a snowblower. It's an undeniable jinx.

Its gotten pretty ridiculous here in years past with shoveling.   I have resisted because I do like shoveling to a certain degree and then we had a couple winters recently when a snowblower would have never been touched (barely touched a shovel) and did not seem like it was worth the money.    My wife bought it on sale on Black Friday... it was a deal she could not pass up.

I hope it pays off very soon!

Wuss. My 75yr old Chinese neighbor single-handely shoveled over three feet of snow off his driveway and roof during that blizzard a few years ago. Did it back in 2010 too.

Phil shoveled 11 feet of snow at stampede pass back in the day.
