Quit being a millennial douchebag!

If the parent is picking up the tab, then the parent ABSOLUTELY has a vote in where a child goes to college, or at a bare minimum veto power.

That said, I do agree that a parent should not dictate which school their kid should go to, in the end that will be a big waste of money as the kid won't want to be there and fail out (speaking from personal experience).

But yeah, my son was looking at UC Berkley, and we were going along with that even though we were not at all thrilled about it, but we told him that UO and WSU were not an option.  I have very VERY strong personal feelings against UW, but I was going to suck it up if he decided to go there, because it is a good school.

Veto power when it comes to funding is totally reasonable, but dictating "You are going to MSU because father said so" is BS. Parents need to learn to let their children be their own person at some point.

But then again being the selfish hillbilly that Andrew is, I'm not at all surprised that's the kind of parent he'd be.

I'm jewish and I support Omar. She was discussing government policy, not Jews or Israelis. The government of a nation is not the same thing as the people of that nation, and we should be able to criticize the former without insulting the latter.

Then you’re an idiot. It’s called a dog whistle, analogous to the phrase “monkey this up” as it relates to African Americans.

If it was just one comment, sure, I’d give her a pass, but she literally can’t go 2 weeks without saying something revealing.

- It’s all about the Benjamin’s

- Dual Loyalty

- Israel has hypnotized the world

- Jokes about Al Qaeda

Give me a f**king break. And the AIPAC doesn’t even crack the list of top-100 in political donors. Why all the obsession with “that part” of the world?

If you don’t know the answer, you’re hopeless.

Doesn't matter what the parents say.   Once his mind is warped in one of those Indoctrination Societies, he won't be his own person.  I don't think any children should go to those brainwash academies.  Go to a trade school and learn a highly skilled trade.  No debt, more freedom, and you can still think for yourself.

Or maybe let kids choose their own paths? This is some demeaning s**t. You chastise colleges as “safe spaces” or whatever, yet you’re doing exactly that by selfishly sheltering your kids from those opposing political views. Hypocrisy at the finest. Let them develop their own world views.

Lovely blanket of snow outside, temp holding steady at 32. A lovely March surprise, considering it wasn’t forecast by anybody! Anyways, good night everyone.

I still can’t get over the fact David Duke, Rep. Omar, and the left wing of the Democratic Party are suddenly marching in lockstep. And Seattle pulled off a record breaking February in an El Niño/+PDO winter.

What the hell is happening?

So the University of Oregon and WSU are horrible schools but are ranked quite a bit higher than MSU.    And you hate UW with every fiber of your being for some reason.

I really enjoy the weather related posts on this forum enough that I've been willing to put up with all of the mindless bickering and BS, and give you (and others) the benefit of the doubt as a relative new comer, but I've finally come to realize that you really are a tool.

I never said that UO, WSU or UW were horrible schools.  I said that UO and WSU were not options for my son.  And yes I have my opinions about UW, but I said it is a good school, and I was willing to put my personal feeling aside if that was where he wanted to go.  Last I checked I am entitled to my opinions.  All I was doing was elaborating on my point that if a parent is footing the bill for uni, then they should have a say on where they are sending that money, and having just gone through the decision process, used that as an example.

But since you've brought it up.....Yes, *FWIW*, and "In MY opinion" MSU is a very good school.  Plenty of other people think the same.  They are not hurting for enrollment, they are building lots of new buildings...new Chemistry building in the last 5-10 years, new Business School in the past couple of years, new Engineering building just opened in December, and a new dorm about 2 years ago, new dining hall opened last fall.

Some don't, apparently yourself included, and that is fine (not that you need my validation or approval on the matter).

I know my son's personality, and I know he would be very bored in Pullman.  As for UO, we lived in the Willamette Valley for several years, spent plenty of time in Eugene and got to know the "personality" of the campus, and knew it would not be a good fit for him either.  OSU would have been fine but we told him "no" on that as well....the reason (which applies to UO as well):  He has horrible grass seed allergies.  The Willamette Valley is not a good place to live if you have grass seed allergies.  This comes from personal experience, it's one of the main reasons we left. I had allergies so bad max doses of prednesone would not help.  I can't really see it going much better for one of my offspring that is showing the same allergy issues that I have.

Also, *FWIW*  WSU was a front runner for a period of time, but he did his research and eventually reached the same conclusion as us.  Believe me when I say that if he really wanted to go there, he would have fought for it.  He is a very strong willed individual.  So while my son is 18 and an adult in the eyes of the law, that does not mean that he knows everything (he thinks he does) or knows what he wants.  After we toured Missoula, he didn't even want to waste the time going to Bozeman, we had to drag him there.  We wanted him to see/experience both before making his decision, and guess what, he is NOT going to school in Missoula.

So, I'm not really sure where the F**K you get off putting words in my mouth, but I am now recognizing that it is a standard tactic for you here.  Its sad because you do seem to be pretty knowledgeable about the weather in the area (in my opinion).

Yeah, I agree with you about giving them a choice and strong voice in the process. In fact, when it came to MSU, we were very careful. His grandmother works for MSU, and he is the 4th generation to attend. His great grandfather got his degree in Civil Engineering (and had the most perfectly symmetrical haystacks in the valley they ranched in), his great grandfather's brother was actually a Rhodes Scholar at MSU, his grandmother and one of my wife's first cousin's all graduated from there. We did not point that out to him until he had finalized his decision. His grandmother (who is has no problem expressing her opinion) actually did a very good job of keeping her nose out of the decision process. She communicated through us offering her help, and did not try to sway his decision. She was of course over the moon when he did decide.

Edit: it’s also worth mentioning (May have mentioned it before) that I was “forced” into a college, failed out and wasted a lot of money because I didn’t want it. As a result Iwill be 47 this June/July when I FINALLY get my Bachelors degree, and wishing I had all of that wasted money back...

So I do get what you are saying....

Unhinged?  Nope, I'm an American patriot.  Served 3 tours overseas.

Go to any University in the USA and they are slowly eroding the beliefs and convictions our forefathers stood for.  Teaching children to give foreigners more rights than naturalized citizens.  Stomping on the constitution.

It really doesn't matter what beliefs your child has as they enter one of these places for 4 years.  Normally by the time they are done they have been trained to be an obedient liberal servant.

P.S.  That is the last I will speak on the subject as this is a weather forum.  Cheers!

Not sure how we got into David duke and liberalism vs conservativism last night haha but anyways March 9th basically feels like it’s the 1st day of spring. It’s weird looking at the forecast and seeing upper 40s and mid 50s instead of snow and 30s to low 40s. Looks like there was some people who got snow last night in Oregon so that’s a cool way to end the winter. My piles of snow in the parking lot at my house are finally gone after a month. We will see what happens next year...looks like the mountains are going to keep stacking some snow for awhile longer so we’re gonna have good snowpack this year. As fun as the snow has been I definitely want to start wearing t shirts and shorts since it’s been a full 6 months now since it’s been warm enough. Hopefully next winter we can score some encore epic winter but it’ll be hard topping this record breaking winter.

Tacoma WA elevation 300’

Monthly rainfall-3.56”

Warm season rainfall-11.14”

Max temp-88

+80 highs-2

+85 highs-2

+90 highs-0

No big deal, it’s only March 9th, 26 degrees and I have had snow on the ground for the last 35 days. Meh.

Oh and you would hardly know on the forum that the Portland area had a big surprise snowstorm last evening. Good thing people were on here telling everyone else how to raise their kids and talking about David Duke...nobody cares about stupid snow and cold anyway.

Chewbacca... I don't want to quote that entire rant again.   Seems like the forum has gone in all kinds of non-weather discussions.

I am sorry for assuming you meant that UO and WSU were horrible schools.   I was being a sarcastic and snippy of course... because I had just said my son is going to WSU and then within a day both you and Andrew said you would not allow you kids to go there, but were totally happy with MSU.   Academically... I believe they are on same basic level.   Its not like we are debating Harvard vs Bellevue Community College.     Sorry I took offense. I understand much better now.

If I had randomly said that I would not allow my kid to go to MSU without offering any reason then you might take some offense too or at least question my reasons.

Sadly, UM is circling the drain.  I have friends and family at the executive administrative level the university system in Montana, and UM is really struggling with money, and in turn, enrollment.  We toured both when my son was looking for schools, and went with MSU....he said that he felt like he would enjoy Missoula more, but KNEW he would get a better education from MSU.  We could definitely feel there was a dark cloud over the UM campus, and just got an all around bad vibe.  "Grandma" works for MSU and did not want to bias our decision process or come across like she was pushing my son towards MSU, so she purposely withheld this information.  Before the tours, my wife and I really wanted him to go to UM because it was only a 1 hour drive from the family ranch (MSU is 2.5 hours) and it is (obviously) closer to Washington state.

My understanding is that things went south with their previous leadership team, who, among other things, tried to sweep a sexual assault problem under the rug several years back, and it sounds like they have been busted more recently with cooking their crime statistics.  I have even heard (from my son) that its getting to the point they are not sure how they can keep the doors open.

The new President has an impressive background, being a West Point grad and retired Green Beret along with a very impressive educational background.  From what I have heard, he is a really great person, and probably the best person to turn the ship around, but its been really slow going so far.

Another note about the state of affairs at UM.  Like Washington and Oregon with their in state rivalry games, the band travels for the away games.  According to my son, The year before last, UM could not afford to send their band to Bozeman.  In order to keep the tradition going, the MSU band alumni raised the money to cover the travel expenses for the UM band.  The game is back in Bozeman again this year, and it will be interesting to see what happens.  We are planning a family reunion for that game, as a majority of my wife's family graduated from either UM or MSU

I don't know what Montana will ultimately do, MSU cannot absorb all of UM's students as they are already busting at the seams, and according to my son, a lot of students at MSU don't want all those "pot smokin' drinkin' and partying idiots" from UM on their campus anyway.  LOL!

I really hope the current President can turn things around for UM.  We really like Missoula, and UM is a pretty campus.  We have several family members who enjoyed their educational experience there....15-20+ years ago.

As for MSU, we've met the president there and she is one of the most amazing people and educators I think I have ever met, and it carries down to every level of the school.  My son toured the school twice and met with several deans and professors.  He said he got the feeling from everyone he met that they were personally cared about and were invested in his academic success.  As a student I think he still feels that way.

We looked seriously at MSU last summer with our daughter.  Great staff.  Ended on U of Wyoming.  Lot of money available. Scholarships were amazing.  Staff from every dept took the time to meet with us.  Impressive.  The worst crime they've had there were a couple stolen bicycles.

28 here this morning with very little melting since the snow fell last night.attachicon.gifScreenshot_20190309-064739_Gallery.jpg

Amazing what a few miles and a little (300ft) elevation makes.  You've kicked my butt all winter, relatively speaking.  31f this am with just a dusting.  At least we had some good window snow for an hr last night.  Better than nothing.  How did you do Jan '17?  I was warm nosed all night and only ended up with about 4" when all was said and done.  Didn't turn over to snow here till about 4am.   By then much of Portland was buried.

I got 5.5" from the 1-10-17 event. I remember a lot of that snow falling as it was 33/34 but was so heavy it stuck anyways. The really heavy totals were west of us in Portland itself.

And as far as this year, I've just gotten very lucky with where the precip has ended up.

Yes. Must have been frustrating watching the heavy stuff miss you a few miles to the west. I ended up with over 15" not too far west of ya.

I didn't know at the time how much other areas were getting so I was just happy with what I was seeing. Plus, I cant complain about nearly a half a foot of snow anyways.

There was a line just about to 224, about a mile past the Carver Bridge.  That was where it really started to pile up.  When it finally turned over early in the am, temps did manage to get between 31-32f for the final 2" .  it wasn't all wet snow and it managed to stay below freezing for almost a week here so at least it didn't melt right off.  Got almost 5 days out of it.  My mother in law out in Mt. Scott kept texting me of how the snow was piling up at 8-9pm and I was 38f and all rain for hours!  Worst (non) snow event I ever had to live through.  Mid levels finally cooled off around 4am but the damage had been done.  Not complaining about having 4" snow fall but it's the what could have been that still eats at me, separated by only a few miles.

Going way out to day 9... the highs are still below freezing in the basin.   I just think it must have something wrong.

A little warmer over there on day 10... but I also don't think it will be that much cooler in Portland.

12Z GFS is showing the same general pattern next weekend... but it shows the basin warming up to more reasonable levels.
