PNW April 2023 Weather Discussion

It was a great winter up here. A lot of people just have different preferences and expectations for what makes a great winter. Statistically it was one of the best of the 21st century. Most people don’t really care about the statistics of it…and are more focused on if they got a big snow or not. Kinda how your favorite winter 2020-2021 was considered amazing because of 1 huge snow event but the rest of it was the opposite of statistically impressive.

Yeah, I’d give the winter here a solid B for here. Only thing missing was a big snow event but we got plenty of small events and even January didn’t totally suck since we got some action at the end. Plus Dec 22 was an unforgettable day with highs in the low 20s with gusts in the 40s and had a Midwest winter feel to it for sure. Sucks that we were so close to big snow events many times but just couldn’t quite pull it off.

Solid 00z GFS run. Looks like 3 nice warm days. Should be a nice gift for our fair weather fans.

00Z ECMWF shows a rainy weekend next week for western WA.   Feels like that is how it usually works when ridging tries to build in the spring.   Warm rain is good too.  This run shows some rain next Sunday with dewpoints in the mid to upper 50s.

Light snow here!

Had a feeling you might see something this morning. I see Shelton is reporting snow as well. Just a tad too warm here overnight has been 36-37. Close but not quite.

38 with some chunky rain falling currently. Ended up with a 50/40 spread yesterday. Chilly showers at times but also lots of quiet periods with sunbreaks. Would be nice to see things get a little more active today.

I know everyone was hoping for some snow but it really looks like we could see it down to some really low elevations late tonight into tomorrow morning. That's when we could see a chance of snow 🤗❄️

Love seeing those types of winters. Unfortunately it wasn’t a great one here in the Redmond area. Usually those would coincide but not this year.

Looks like the EPSL mostly King county south could see some snow these next few nights based off the 06z Euro. I wouldn’t expect anything to accumulate much though especially during the daylight hours.

At SLE the November-March period was the 24th coldest since 1892. However, it was the 2nd coldest since 1985 with only 2007-08 edging it out.

It was the 10th coldest Feb/March combo and coldest since 1989. Even with how "cold" February/March have been in recent years the only other ones at SLE in the top 30 this century are 2019 (21) and 2009 (25). Though much of that probably has to do with UHI... Well that's what I thought, but when I look at just average high temps, the 21st century picture is even more bleak.

At EUG it was their 3rd coldest Feb/March combo, however, their records only go back to 1938. It was #7 coldest November-March. Also slightly behind 2007-08.

Continuing to geek out on the ACIS data... Interestingly 21-22 was one of the warmest winters on record at Crater Lake.

On the other hand, this November-March was the 3rd coldest at Crater Lake in their 1919-present period of record. Pretty impressive. Only 1948-49 and 1968-69 were colder.

To date Crater Lake has their 20th snowiest season (October-March), but its the 2nd snowiest this century (Behind 2010-11). For seasonal totals overall, if they have a big April and decent May they could break into the top 10 all time, and possibly pass 2010-11 though that would be a heavy lift. They aren't far behind 05-06 and 16-17' for on the overall list and may pass them both in the next few days.

I don't think there will be much of a warm spell... trends are clear on models towards wetter and flatter.   Going to enjoy some humid rain though... relatively speaking of course.  It won't be Phil level humid.   😀

Down here it looks like we could potentially hit 70 still. Well in the valley, probably not up here.

qpf_acc-imp.us_nw.pngPretty wet. 3.73" up here which is over half our average April rainfall.

snku_acc-imp.us_nw.png

This thing is still dumping 9" of Kuchera here... I'm feeling its overdone, but we'll see how the next couple days go. What's amazing is it's showing an additional 3-4' of snow along the crest from Mt. Jefferson south to the Sky Lakes Wilderness. About 2' at Mt. Hood.

A friend reported snow. They live near Bellingham or higher up in Skagit County.

Showers here in SeaTac. I think it's safe to say that in the words of Rick Rizz, the roof is (will be) closed.

Near here, yeah. Last little cell is moving past now and then it looks dry. Nice big flakes - accumulated maybe 1/4 inch.

A quick clip of the mix at Lake Goodwin when I was there earlier. It’s quite raw out, still only 36 at home currently.
