May 2020 Weather discussion for the PNW

So she likes cheese with salmon (cardinal sin by the way), but yet won't wear a mask....

And, zucchini? That should never touch a grill, at all, ever...

I think you and her should do a Zoom meeting so you can school her on this situation!

Good luck and god speed.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

No cheese is what you do for salmon.

They are frozen salmon patties so it’s not like you are ruining some thing already ruined...Haha!

You got to have at least some type of sauce. This recipe sounds yummy, yogurt and cucumber sauce.

Around 12k in lightning strikes in the PNW! One more shot of the current 24 hour lightning strike map. Just blows me away!!!

You all got to experience Florida weather today. Florida is the lightning capital of the US for anyone unaware. Good stuff!!

Go in the summer. The humidity is unbearable but you’re just about guaranteed to see thunderstorms in the evening if you’re there for a couple days.

I’ve spent ~ 4 weeks down there during the summer over the last 3 years. Storms down there seem to produce lots of heavy rain and lightning, but there’s almost no streamflow in the atmosphere. Storms sort of just pop up along outflow boundaries and sea breezes then collapse.

I’ve never experienced anything close to severe down there either, probably for that reason.

Up to 1.46” on the day.

This storm really pushed the Seattle area way above normal for May rainfall.

It looks like SEA is going to end up close to 3 inches which is 150% of normal.

Were you up in the panhandle?

Here are the times I've been there:

1. Miami in November.

2. Pensacola in September.

3. Pensacola in October.

4. Tampa in March.

So yeah, I've probably missed the prime time.  :D

We ended up with 0.58” yesterday. A nice soaker to end May. About 5.75” on the month. A little over 1” above average. Does not due much to alleviate the long term drought, but will keep things green through June at least.

Dang really missed out yesterday, barely any thunder in the morning and just 1/4 rain in the last week, just kept sliding East or west of me.

We’ve had 1.10” here in the last week now. Lots of times it’s your area south and west of the metro area out by Shelton that gets more rain than us...but this was a different set up not a SW flow.

SEA set a daily rainfall record of 1.14 inches breaking record of 1.06 from 1987.

There has been an additional .22 there today so far bringing the storm total to 1.36 inches.

SEA is at 3.16 inches for May... normal for the month is 1.95 inches so that is 162% of normal.

Storm total here was 1.15 inches... which is actually less than SEA.

The Cedar Lake station near me ended well above normal for May at almost 10 inches and is now already approaching the total rain for all of 2019.   That station is just under 70 inches for the year compared to 81.80 inches for all of 2019.

That station is also just about 20 inches above normal for the year.

SEA is 3.57 inches above normal for the year.   Its been a wet year so far in King County.

Remember when we were going to be “paying dearly” for that nice stretch of weather we had back in April...Going a whole week without rainfall was going to lead to major issues this season...Yeah.

I suspect June is going to end up wet as well.

Should be on pace to exceed your 25" annual average quite soon.

Probably averages around 45 inches up there... and that entire area is running significantly above normal for the year.

It can still be far wetter than normal in areas that are normally wetter than other areas.   ;)

Will go down as a warm and dry May for Portland.

The 7th such combo in a row.

Basically ended up with close to average precip in Portland for May.

55". A lot wetter than Portland or Seattle.

Her's almost 500' and clearly gets significant orographic help in the right pattern. Arlington averages 47.5" and is a good deal lower in elevation.

I don't care if its 200 inches.     Whatever the normal is there... its been running well above normal for that entire area up there this year.   Same with King County.
