July 2023 PNW Observations and Discussions

The asian tiger mosquito population is out of control this year. Walk outside and within 30 seconds there are dozens (if not hundreds) of them swarming you.

Looked around and found one source. I’ve unknowingly been breeding them just 20ft from the back door. 🤦‍♂️

I guess malaria is back in the US this year. Don't know the details, but I heard something about Florida and maybe Texas?

Will be another underachieving high temp day... always happens when the marine layer is steadily moving in after dawn.   It usually takes until afternoon to clear on these types of days.   ECMWF started picking up on this yesterday.

Fernandina Beach, FL observed an 88°F dewpoint on 7/6. That’s almost instant heat stroke if you’re out in the sun.

Here's the obs for Fernandina Beach. Dubai tier heat indices.

Easily one of the worst starts to summer on record in FL/GA. Saint Simons (where I’ll be 8/12-8/26) has seen heat indices over 120°F already. My Dad in Sarasota has decided to join me in Seattle later this month, lol.

Which is why I desperately crave a troughy pattern when I’m up there 7/25-29. 🙏 It’s the only reprieve I’ll get until late September (at earliest).

The off-equator NPAC (5-20N) is still experiencing anomalous trades, consistent with the -PMM/-PDO.

Very unlikely to be a PDO/PMM flip associated with this El Niño, which puts it in the camp with pre-1976 El Niños that occurred in conjunction with the “cold phase” NPAC.

Last time this happened was a half-century ago. The 2009/10 event tried, but it had a very different evolution (modoki type) and AMM/AMO signature was dormant.

Also that westerly burst in the NATL and IO is the canonical expression in +AMM regimes. If the EPS is correct, off-equator NATL SSTs will spike again later this month as wind-evaporative cooling effect is attenuated.

Normally you’d expect this in the NPAC at the same latitudes, but alas, not this year.

High of only 64 so far after a low of 53. If temps keep underperforming maybe I can pull off a sub-70 high on Monday.

Today was an old-skool style marine layer overperformance. Lasted well into the day and early afternoon. Looks like KSEA will top out a degree or two cooler than yesterday.

Read about how at NOAA and NWS actively look for computer science majors who know the heavy conceptual programming for their weather models, and that's where I could come in. Always saw weather as a fun hobby but now I'm heavily considering to actually enter the field after numerous failed attempts with applying for traditional tech jobs. The industry is pretty miserable. But combining weather and CS, it's something that would at least get me out of bed every morning lol.
