January Weather In The PNW 2024 (Part III) - The Warming Shot

Eagerly awaiting a return to normal here. Cold rain is getting old.

I believe the central and south sound have payed all their debts for 2019 and 2021. We're due for a fat return hopefully soon. Maybe next month if we're lucky.

Ended up with a 33/24 day yesterday. Chilly and breezy with about 1/2” of freezing rain and some very light thawing late.

Hit 35 last night at one point, but back down to 33 now with rain falling, easterlies picking up and DPs back into the 20s. Cant remember another time that we’ve gotten significant zr, warmed a little above freezing, then dropped back below with more zr but that might be what happens today. Pretty rare set up.

Ugh this blows. Back below freezing and everything is starting to ice up again. We’re hoping to get a plumber out to fix the pipe, but it’s an ice rink right now.

I was wondering if they were going to issue one. Looks like the 12z Euro just caught on and shows an inch or two up here as well. Of course now that they issued it, it's probably going to warm up quickly and transition to rain.

Beginning to lose hope for the end of the month. A jet extension appears likely now.

The Portland area continues to cool slightly at the lower levels. Seems like pdx is struggling to get back down to freezing though which means most areas might just be slightly too warm for significant icing this afternoon. It is down to 34 here now though.

Thinking we'll see things stabilize in the 32-33 range for most which should keep icing restricted to the direct outflow areas on the eastside.

I'm flat at 32 right now. Kind of a weird purgatory where nothing is melting but nothing is accumulating either.

Arlington, Lakewood (west of Smokey Point) , and Marysville all went from 2hrs late to closed at the very last minute. My co worker was driving her kid to school when she got the alert.

Starting to stick to main roads near home. So bummed I’m missing this because of work. With my luck lately it’ll switch to rain right when I get off.

I'm not sure there will be enough precipitation for 6", but it might happen. Down to 31F here with continued light snow and 0.5" of new.

I hope this is good news for NB too.    In 2019 it just stayed as snow until it ended despite what the models were showing.  No power or tree issues.

Looks like some lighter echoes are moving up the Puget Sound right now. I’m guessing once those move up towards Everett the fun will be over and it’ll switch to rain.

My daughter and I bailed.   I need to work and no power is getting old.  North Bend is a mess.  It was actually snowing and windy when we left which be awesome.   But power issues aren't going to get better any time soon and assume the heavier stuff today will be freezing rain.   Right at Snoqualmie Ridge exit 6 miles west of NB is the cut off and it's immediate.   From windy and snowing to regular rain in a span of 1/4 mile.

Hope we have our trees when go back tomorrow.    They are bending over in ice right now.

I’m surprised someone with your resources doesn’t have a generator. I am a mere pauper, but recognize it as an investment which pays for itself in convenience many times over. It is an integral part of any resiliency plan.

Tim don't you have a little generator? Really easy to own a 2k generator that will run small things in the house, you cant even hear them run 25ft away. you can get a nice one for 400 bux

Winter is effectively over.

If we look at the 1965-66 analog we see that March was a cool month with low snow levels.

So true!    Was going to do it back after the 2006 windstorm and then power issues became non-existent and still are except for ice storms.   But there is no way PSE can prevent issues with an ice storm.   We will probably revist it now just for peace of mind.

My generator runs pretty much my entire house and I got it for like $800 at Costco. It was about $1200 to get the switch put on the house. If you want to go full generac like many of my neighbors that’s more in the $20-30k range, but probably worth it if you can afford it.
