January Weather In The PNW 2024 (Part III) - The Warming Shot

So far my season total is 4, normal would be 15-20 by now. Looking back i cant believe i had 44 inches in 2007/2008. I had a bunch of 2-4 events and one big boy on DEC 2 OF 13 INCHES.

I would give this event a B+ if there had been 2” of snow at my place but my 1/3” of slop at the end brings it way down to a C.  The past two years there has been triple my snowfall in places 2 miles away in all directions and this event was no different.

I have to keep remembering that I was running at a 1/4” of total snowfall for the winter of 2018/19 up to 2/2/19…Then by the second week of March I was near 40” on the season lol!

Yeah, Mt. Baker hasn't been above 800" since 2017-18 and hasn't been above 900" since the record breaking year in 1998-99. The base depth hasn't been over 250" since 2011-12. I would love to see one of those epic mountain snowpack years again!

My neighbor has been there since 1980 and i asked him what years had the deepest depth. 

1st. Dec 1996 40 inch depth.

2nd. Feb 93 or 95 he couldn't remember 36 inch.

3rd Feb 19 34 inch.

4th Dec 2008 23 inch.

Feb 2021 18 inch.

I was told there was 48 inches in 1969 out there, could be true and close to the same depth in 1963.

I give it a B- only due to the historic cold. If this was a Nina year it would have been a C-. Even though I was really hoping for something, anything this season I honestly thought it was going to be one of those years like 2015/16 where we might see a slushy dusting at one point but nothing otherwise and no arctic blast…This has been a pleasant surprise, and in mid January no less!

Just hit freezing here and sure enough there are a few frozen drops forming at the end of the bushes out back. It was the slowest cooldown ever over the last 12 hours. 37 to 32 over that long length of time.

It was really wild. It was a slow but EXTREMELY steady decrease. 31.3F

Looks like a lot of houses nearby lost power again because of the wind this time. Really greatful we kept power through this whole thing

The temperature reading at pdx must be wrong. Still at 36 even though much of the Portland metro area is back down to 31-33 degrees. They are also reporting freezing rain which is tough to do at 36 degrees.

I'm surprised you didn't have a deeper snow depth in 2008. If I remember correctly I think we had close to 24" here.

Is he seriously saying the warm December made the roads to warm in the middle of January??

We had the same warm December and our roads were a sheet of ice within 10 minutes of the freezing rain starting.

Finally able to post again briefly. Our power is on but internet is out and I only get 1 bar of AT&T service in downtown Springfield. Been so slow I can’t even send a text message.

Tap water is still contaminated so I can’t wash the dishes.

Over 7 years since the last ice storm and this one was truly catastrophic.

Perhaps even worse than the "warm roads" was his dispute with the data from SEATAC. He says the air temp at the airport was reported as 31 degrees. He goes on to say that the airport reported an hour of freezing rain. He acknowledges that SEATAC is at a higher elevation than BFI and OLM, but then says that SEA's sensors may have been wrong. He also says that he measured the rain at HIS HOUSE and it was 35. But he doesn't live at SEA. In previous blogs he has mentioned living somewhere in Sand Point or nearby. Close enough to UW that he bikes (or used to bike) to work. Now, why would he expect that data from SEA to measure data at BFI or at OLM or at Cliff Mass's backyard? Isn't he the guy that likes to talk about how many microclimates WA has? I. Just. Cannot.

So is mine, still! There are still areas of ice/dirt crystals that popped up in the boggy parts of the yard when it froze over last week. So how on earth does a warm December play into this past week's ground temps?

This this the line that slays me, however-

So.... PSE didn't have a ton of outages? Traffic collisions don't count anymore? All those schools that opened late or not all the next morning equals very little impact? LOL no. Are we dealing with damage or scale that Oregon is? No, we are not. But to say that it was not freezing rain and that it had very little impact is just disingenuous. The only hot air in this tri-state region to occur this week came from Cliff Mass opening his dang mouth.

In terms of anomalies, Feb 2015 is king in the post WWII era. Second coldest 850mb temp on record, and it happened in the 2nd half of Feb (warmer climo).

There’ve been blasts like this in January, but never in February (let alone late February!).

His comment about the lack of freezing rain at Seatac and the faulty reading was a direct jab at Micheal Synder. In that spicy tweet fest from that night, CM was going on about how nothing was *actually* happening despite folks saying that it was. MS responded by pointing out that his weather station was showing ZR at his house as a WTF man... and of course, CM doubled down.

And to some extent, Snyder's response of his weather station is more appropriate since it was an actual picture of his weather station (not just reported) and Snyder lives in Normandy Park or something much closer to the airport and probably near the same elevation.
