January Weather In The PNW 2024 (Part III) - The Warming Shot

Just for @TT-SEA the nearly 30,000 acre Oologah Lake. The lake has 209 miles of shoreline and when it was filled inundated the land Will Rogers grew up on, his boyhood home was relocated to the current lakeshore. Quite a behemoth of a lake. You can still see a little ice remains from the big cold snap a couple weeks ago when they had highs in the single digits. Currently 37 and cloudy with a stiff northerly breeze.

You might be the most sensitive, paranoid, and spiteful person I have ever encountered.   No idea why you think any of this.

Why do you think you own this place?  This is our home too.   We have dead trees.   We live through smoke and heat and hate it just as much as you and everyone else.   We also love our lake days and beautiful summer days.   All of the above.   And control none of it.

But can you provide proof that you do NOT control it?

My brother texted me a bit ago and said he hit 60 in Salem. He lived the past 4-5 years in the Coos Bay Area, so he’s used to 60s this time of year. They actually did well last year for snow though. Probably had about 6-8" total between a couple of events.

If you're talking about salem, that is just simply not true. I doubt they got any more than 4" of wintry accumulation, between their snow, sleet, and zr, in the 22-23 season.

Maybe you were talking about Coos Bay instead of salem?

Coldest temp this winter: -7 Jan 13th

Snow depth at Mount Bachelor (last updated March 27th) 107"

Colorado was really amazing when we went last year. The variety was really cool. I definitely want to visit again. The December 2022 arctic blast happened while I was there as well, making it even better. The first two pictures are from Colorado Springs and the last two from Frisco

I like Co Springs. Spent a ton of time there over the years. Last time we were there was February 2020, it was snowing and we drove back to Denver a very round about back way and it was snowing. Saw a ton of elk.

The Wind River range is probably the most underrated mountain range in the lower 48. Almost endless opportunities for campers, hikers, climbers, fishers, hunters, etc. Doesn't mean it's the best mountain range, but it's definitely the most underrated one.Wyoming-2023-backpackingtrip.thumb.jpg.a0eea494848b7e85f9e8ab6bbeacc258.jpg

The Bighorns are underrated too.

I am talking about Coos Bay. He just moved to Salem over the summer. I couldn't tell you how much snow Salem got last year. It seemed like amounts varied wildly depending on what part of the city, even at the lowest elevations. NE Salem didn't get much with the February event, probably 1-2", but where my office is just south of downtown had 3-4" with that event. Albany totally got hosed with that one. Not even a dusting.

58 degrees and cloudy on a summer afternoon is truly depressing!   We have enough gloom the rest of the year.

58 would be about 10-12 degrees below normal in June... and 9 degrees above normal now.

I did hear some random croaking today…Much like I heard before the cold spell. Not the chorus yet however.

57 up here in Bellingham with .44" for the day.

As for all of the talk of the PNW mountains and scenery, while it is truly incredible, the mountains of the Alaska inside passage is on another level.  If I thought I could handle the dark winters, I would move to Juneau, Ketchikan,or Sitka in a heartbeat

Comparing natural beauty seems so pointless. What exactly makes these areas more spectacular than others. Is there some sort of objective standard your measuring them by, like topographic relief. Or do you just like them more? If it’s the latter that’s cool, but then you have to be fine with the fact that your opinion is 100% subjective.

I say it's what ever takes your breath away. Some places seem to do it more frequently then others.. I have seen a lot of beautiful places in this country but everytime I go to the end of the street and see Tahoe it never gets old. Every time I have been to Seattle the view of Rainer in the distance gives me the same feeling. My co worker took the picture below this summer.

Agreed re: whatever takes your breath away, When I was 10, my maternal grandparents took us grandchildren on a five-week tour of 11 states. Went back to Utah a year later for a couple weeks. 21 years later, went back there for our honeymoon in 2011. I’m smitten by that high desert. A few of the many pics I took from Bryce Canyon on our honeymoon in May 2011.

Looks like Salem set a record high today breaking the previous record set in 2016. They are also now 0.17" away from the 10" mark on the month. If we are going to torch at least it was with an arctic blast sandwiched in and a ton of precip.

Heating costs are temporarily reduced... helping offset the increased cost in the middle of the month.    Very helpful for those struggling to make ends meet.   Blessings.

I love exploring eastern Washington waterways on my jetski. Lots of fun underwater features to look at as well. Looking forward to more in 2024!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

I’ve done a lot of climbing around the world and seen beautiful scenes from the tops of a lot of peaks but for me nothing compares to the awe of the trees of the Redwoods for some reason. I went back last summer and was seriously awestruck for hours walking through them. I have no idea why it strung a chord in my heart. My wife was seriously concerned for me and then said why don’t you say those things about me😂.

My electric bill was $369 last month. PGE JACKED rates 18% to start the new year.

Looks like Salem set a record high today breaking the previous record set in 2016. They are also now 0.17" away from the 10" mark on the month. If we are going to torch at least it was with an arctic blast sandwiched in and a ton of precip.

Good attitude, Andrew.

Not sure if you caught the ICON, but it's pretty cold.
