March 2024 Weather in the PNW

Recommended Posts

3rd day in a row of waking up to a light coating of snow. Still snowing here and the radar has been juicy but it is just a hair too warm to stick well. Probably doing well if you're above 500ft here.

Of course the Coast Range microclimate is delivering even at the lowest elevations:

I bet the main difficulty is navigating the phone tree and finding the right person to call.

@Chewbacca Defense if you are a weather spotter, you get a spotter ID (some offices don't do ids) and a direct number to call the NWS if certain weather thresholds occur. For example in Spokane's CWA, we call if we get more than 2 inches below3k ft and 6(?) if above. They also love to know mix precipitation, hail if over penny(?) size, etc. Notably they don't care about lightning.

The phone number is a direct line and you call saying I'm spotter x at specific location. Here is weather condition Y and how much we have. Condition is stopped/ongoing since Z time. Then you hang up with no chatter or questions.

This one but this goes a little longer. I didn't figure anything would stick much today.

That band that moved through here was a 5 inch per hr rate cell.  Since this cold on shore flow started I've had a total of 7 inches.

We had 3 inches in a c-zone on Sunday night into Monday morning that melted with the warm up on Tuesday night and Wednesday and basically nothing since.

We had 0.5" Monday, 7.7" Thursday, 6" Friday, 7" Saturday, and have gotten HOSED today with only 1". 32 and partly cloudy with decent drippage off the trees right now.

Amazingly we have now passed 2017-18's seasonal snow total.

Some crazy vids coming out of the Sierra Nevada.  Massive drifts. Talk about an awesome climate up there, sometimes the wait for snow can be agonizing but when it hits it hits in a big way

12Z ECMWF is another notch north with the deformation band on the north side of the low moving inland tomorrow night.   Clips King County on this run.

Crazy, the shower activity looks to be building on the coast again, not finishing with snow today here

No snow. I’d rate this winter a D*. That arctic blast in Jan was pretty neat tho, recorded the lowest temp imby that I’ve seen and it was nice to see that we are still capable of a somewhat 1950 arctic blast (just needed some snow cover!).

season total 0.2 inches of snow. worst since 2014-15. 24-25 should be fun though! Mayyyybe one last chance this winter Monday
