I definitely think that some of the splotchy amounts on the map can be explained by the difficulty in measuring due to the wind. Yeah, the 1918 storm was a very cold one... truly life threatening to be out in. When looking at the daily data for Chicago, you can see that at least some portion of that snow would've occurred with temps in the single digits or possibly below zero. Wind chills would've been a lot colder of course. That 24.8" total in Chicago between Jan 6 and Jan 12 is one of the higher amounts in a 7 day period for the city. The highest amount in a 7 day period happened in 1967 (29.9").

That's not really how these things work. The global climate took significant warm jumps with the big El Ninos in 1998 and 2003...but then the PNW started seeing colder/snowier winters again starting around 2006.

The 18z NAM from yesterday is going to bust too high here by about 40 mph. Time to retire that awful model once and for all. Surprised some of the weenies here took it so seriously.
