Yeah, nature likes to balance these things out. I’m sure our regions will end up pretty close on timing in the end.

One could argue this pattern/regime is the “opposite extreme” given the slew of warm/ridgy springs/summers in recent years.

Not sure I’ve ever seen such a consistent Niña background state. Not even 2011 or 2008 can match this insanity. Check out the persistence of the NH subtropical -AAM anomaly. :o

Assuming no further warming, today's 44/32 spread ties the record for all time coldest April day at KSEA! Wow!!!

Even crazier, that record of 38°F was set on the fourth of the month in 1975, whereas today's was set on the 13th! This is beyond record breaking, this is literally tying all time cold figures for this time of year.

I'll have to some digging WAY back and see if anything equals this.  A freeking -13 departure for SEA today.

Could be. Stronger Niña/NPAC High signal than last year by most metrics.

I’m still nervous for the SW US, though. Good chance that 4CH is a beast yet again, even if it doesn’t extend as far N/W this year.

It's pretty mind boggling that SEA actually tied their coldest April day on record even with the extra runway, increased urbanization, and all of that.  We're talking about even beating any April day in the late 1940s / 1950s.  Really special pattern.

The SW could be going into one of the mega droughts that paleo climatologists have found evidence of in the past.  We'll have to wait and see.

Your high of 42 is one for the ages.  Might not even be an equal in the 1850 to 1890 period.  I'll try and look through that stuff over the next couple of days.

Down to 40 and dead calm here now.  Clouds seem to be thinning out pretty good.  Now to see how many freezing low temps we can string.

32 and partly cloudy. Doubt we can stay in the 30s tomorrow, but it could be close if we have good afternoon shower activity.

SEA is already only 4 degrees away from tomorrow's record low.  If they pull it off that would 3 in a row and all over 50 year old records.  VERY impressive!

These temps are insane.  Already seeing a number of 33s out there tonight.  This thing is working out colder than I expected.  Currently 36 here.

Any sort of long-range warmup is getting progressively delayed and diluted. We're probably going to be waiting a while for any sort of warm sunny outdoor activities. Forecast looks 2011-like for here with no highs even breaking out of the mid-50s. Could be running at a strong negative monthly departure.

What I do like about living in a NW flow rainshadow is in these patterns having at least some sun is almost guaranteed in any given day. If it was overcast all the time, I think I'd go insane.

00z GFS has 4 significant storms for N-Cal in the next 8 days. Cannot understate how important that would be heading into the warm season.

Looks like the April 1911 cold snap was similar to this one for intensity and lowland snowfall, but this one will be longer duration.

My college friends from warmer locales are probably going to be getting stir-crazy and complaining a lot over the next week.

I'm not exactly enjoying this pattern but I don't hate it either. Happens somewhat often in places like Sunriver this time of year (maybe for not this long, however), but I'd still give my left nut to live in that climate. Both their winter and summer climo is nothing short of phenomenal.

A friend of mine from high school lost his left nut to cancer but he didn’t get to relocate to a preferred climate as a result.

Hah! We actually got him a Juan Pelota t-shirt a few years ago.

Then of course when I got bit by a melanoma mosquito I ended up being presented with a Buck Melanoma t-shirt.
