You guys missed the worst of the heat down there too thanks to a quicker return to onshore flow. Live by the sword...

Had 113F heat in late June vs this cold (but much-needed) rain in mid April I'm gonna think the abnormal heat is more noteworthy at least for here.

Yeah the heat is more abnormal, it's like a once in a 1000 year event vs. a once in 50-100 year event... Both are still noteworthy.

Yeah normally when they plow it just creates berms on the side of the road or they push it to corners of parking lots.  When it is 3-4 feet, it is just too much.  Leavenworth had to pile it in a parking lot next to the river and then remove it in March because the state didn't want it melting into the river due to chemicals in the snow that would have been on the road when it plowed.

4 days straight now with snow.   We rarely see that even in December or January.  Another 4 inches or so and still snowing hard.

20220413_093252.jpg

We had that situation in 2009/10. Several high population areas received 5-6+ feet of snow in 12 days, and farmers were paid to have snow stored on their land until officials could figure out what to do with it.

Was a giant mess. The snow got so deep and compacted that I literally ran the snowblower up the front steps and around the side of the house. Was impossible to shovel.

This is what it looked like after I cut the path with the snowblower. The snow in the “gorged” section there was still 2 feet deep! Ahh..memories.

I would definitely also include the November 2021 flooding and heavy rain, which was some of the worst on record for much of Whatcom County and the Fraser Valley. Could also toss in the January 2020 airmass, which gave Port Angeles a 2'+ event.

Yeah it just turns to ice piles and not snow piles.  We heard a lot of people's snowblowers broke down, even the larger 2-stage gas blowers.

Good point on the flooding. That January 2020 airmass was also pretty significant for the places it hit. BLI had 23/18 and 21/15 days back to back.

Still cheesed about that not advecting. Some of the readings in central BC and Alberta were Dec 1968-esque. Would have made this last December look mild in comparison.

As a nice bonus, KSEA also dropped to 33°F right before midnight, so yesterday recorded a mid December-esque spread of 47/33 and ultimately a -10.5°F departure. brrrr

This is the first time since February 2014 and March 2012 before that, where I can remember getting significantly more snow than you during an event. I think we had a lot of snow in late February 2019 when it was just cloudy up there, but we also had rain the day you got 45" so...

The day Redding got a foot of snow it was cold light rain at 34 degrees in K-Falls but that month was big for everyone.

The back and forth from snow to rain happened throughout Feb 2019 which is why it never got deeper than 10" at my place. I heard Bend had 2' on the ground tho.

This morning's 32°F at KSEA tied the record for this date set in 1945.

The record low max is 45°F set in 1965. Currently the airport is holding steady at 40°F with thick high clouds.

The heat was more noteworthy all around

Before June 2021, nowhere in the Willamette Valley had ever reliably recorded a 110°F temperature, going back over a century. Had to go to the Rogue Valley or east of the crest to find 110°F readings in Oregon. The general consensus is that it was barely possible, and everything would have to go perfectly right for it to happen.

If we can maintain precip on and off today with cloud cover this just might be the coldest day of the cold spell here. Pulled off a 47/32 yesterday…39/32 so far today.

It's been partly sunny most of the day out here.   Almost have full sunshine at the moment.

KSEA still at 41°F. High clouds and evaporative cooling doing their part so far today.

So since Justin mentioned it the other day... Let's recap.

February 2019, one of the coldest and snowiest on record in the PNW.

Fall 2019, one of the coldest on record in the PNW, coldest in 34 years, 3rd coldest October on record at SLE.

March 14, 2020, one of the latest measurable snows on record at PDX.

September 2020, once in a 50-100 year type warm season east wind event/firestorm.

February 2021, major PDX-SEA snow event, biggest Willamette Valley ice storm since at least 1948.

June 2021, record SHATTERING heatwave.

July 2021, warmest on record for much of the PNW.

December 2021, heavy lowland snow, bitterly cold Seattle-north. Major Fraser River BLAST.

February 2022, major late season cold wave, record lows set or tied at EUG, SLE, and in eastern Oregon.

April 2022, major late season cold wave, latest snow on record at PDX, 2nd latest for downtown Portland.

If any winter in our modern climate is going to pull a 1937, 1949, 1950, 1969... it’s gonna be one of the next couple winters.

Gotta hold on to that Niña through early 2023.

42 currently which is the high so far with rain. No sunshine yet today. Coldest max I’ve recorded for April is 45 degrees in 2008 and 2011. Could threaten those today but it’ll be close.

Tacoma WA elevation 300’

Monthly rainfall-3.56”

Warm season rainfall-11.14”

Max temp-88

While we start getting more typical temps for April later this weekend into next week…the euro still is pretty good for more rain and mountain snows.
