Decent amount of new fire starts yesterday with the lightning over the Central Oregon Cascades.

Box fans really help out a lot. Got 2 running have since 7pm. Don’t have a thermometer inside but I’d guess it’s 75-77 inside which feels pretty good. Hopefully you feel better soon.

Yes, window fans can really help. Don’t want to think how oppressive my laneway house would be right now if I weren’t using fans to ventilate. It’s been nearly dead calm on recent nights.

Indeed.  If you run them at night and turn them off during the day they work really good.  I have been putting a fan outside my patio screen door at night and that works even better.  Dropped to 61 here last night which really made it effective.

July 2022 should end up as the 4th warmest month on record at PDX if you take the NWS forecast for today, after July 1985, July 2018 and July 2015. Should end up hotter than July 2009 and August 2017 as well.

Pretty shocking when you look at the first 3/4 of the month.  Terrible final week.  Let's hope we see a fantastic flip side in the autumn and winter.

The 4CH is just kicking our arses in the summer now.  When that thing goes away it changes dramatically.

Looks like SEA will come in 5th warmest July.  2009 was also warmer here.

Crazy how much hotter it has been east of the cascades, it's been nearly endless 90+ days since the 2nd week.

And it even flipped just as wild where I left, they had the coolest start to a July in decades, but at the end will not be any different from 2021 or 2014. (just listed the two hottest Julys at KLMT)

I wonder what the winter will be like, I'm hoping it's good. Some regionwide cold/snow in January would be nice as well. January 2017 was pretty cold at PDX (33.5 avg temp), but not really elsewhere sadly (37.9 at SEA). The temp difference that month especially early on was pretty notable between PDX at SEA. January 2020 got close at least it seems, but then was very warm the rest of the month.

Found this interesting, on January 8th, 1979, Portland had a 31/21 day while Seattle had a 48/34 day. The difference between Portland and Seattle that month in avg temp was pretty high, Portland had an average temp of 30.7 while Seattle had an average temp of 37.8.

A million times Florida.  Between the hurricanes, tropical pests, the hot and humid weather, and lack of local BBQ cuisine, there's no comparison.

Also....half of Texas won't be under water a century from now.

GFS wants to build the heat back up again after next weekend.

At some point in the next few years we’re probably gonna have to consider 90s not an extreme anymore…. When they become the norm.

Pretty crazy both how long this heatwave has been and the humidity / lack of cooling at night. I find a few days in the 90s with dry air somewhat enjoyable, but a week long slog of sweaty lows in the 60s is pretty brutal.

Also pretty nuts how quickly the Mon-Thurs forecast has flipped from “lots of marine influence with good chance of rain Wed and Thurs” to “only a slight drop off in temps Mon and Tues with very slight chance of rain on Thurs.”

To me it appears we have seen a trend toward a more 4 distinct season regime...at least up this way.  I have no question we are still capable of seeing a region wide event.  It was actually cold here in Jan 2017.  The only time I've seen a fairly large lake near here freeze all the way across and thick enough to walk on.

Texas needs to fix the power grid issue, or both states IMO have an equal number of negatives.

There's got to be a happy medium somewhere.  This year went from one extreme to the other.  I guess the wild swings might bode well going forward.

I am bummed about our summers.  They are 90% of why our glaciers are melting.  No question that at least for now the raging 4CH has become normal.  FWIW there is evidence from distant past precip records in the SW that aspect is cyclical.

Yeah the Portland area (especially away from the Gorge) just got very unlucky in Feb 2019 and in Feb 2021 models showed me getting 12"+ but then everything shifted ~10 miles north and I only had 4.5" or so and some sleet/ZR. The January 2017 storm was amazing though so I don't mind too much. 13" of snow in one night and sunny/cold weather for the next few days is hard to top.
