January 2017 Observations and Model Discussion for the Pacific Northwest

No longer looking like a devastating ice storm for Portland, either. Some ice tomorrow, but nothing overall like what was being shown yesterday.

Yeah, looks fairly manageable at this point. Most areas away from the river should moderate too enough during the day tomorrow to keep impacts in check.

My preferences can beat up your preferences’ dad.

Even for Portland this doesn't seem that impressive anymore. Atlanta, and Tampa Florida getting more snow. Zimbabwe too.

At one point, it was looking like they could have steady to moderate freezing rain from late this afternoon until late tomorrow night or even Monday morning. Looks like considerably less now.

The 18z then drops a small low in for another 1-3" across NW Oregon on Thursday morning. That would be more insult to injury for Puget Sounders.

I honestly don't think anything all that impressive has happened in Portland this entire season. I'm not sure why a lot of WA posters seem  to think we've been scoring big here. Eugene and areas south have been doing really well, but not us.

For all this talk of snow in Portland, I have just a dusting today and the back edge of the precip is already on radar.

My friend just posted a picture of her standing on Greenlake and said people were skating "out in the middle."

Just got home from skating on a good sized pond near my house.

Despite the lack of snow, this has been a pretty impressive coldsnap and it is nice to get some fun out of it.

Salem and EUG were the big winners with snow. It is sleeting here now, but apparently it is still snowing down in Silverton.

-13C to BLI, -11C to SEA with legit Fraser outflow on Thursday.

Could have some serious ICE on Lake Whatcom by next friday. Which is insane because there was considerable ice on the northern end two mornings ago, and probably again this morning. As disappointing as all of this LACK of snow has been up here, the persistent cold IS somewhat fascinating. It's almost as fascinating as having it be below freezing for like 3 weeks and only get a few inches of snow.

For those who know nothing about Lake Whatcom... It's a 14 mile long lake with 3 basins, increasing in depth from north to south. The north end has a maximum depth of 100', which is the area that ice began to expand on.

The only years I know of that featured Ice coverage on the north end of the lake of any kind were years like 1989, 1969, 1950, 1916 etc...  In 1950 the first two of three basins froze over completely from one side to another.... I guess what I'm trying to say is the fact that there is any ice at all is pretty astounding and hasn't happened in over 25 years.

That does sound like a really fun time.

Be very careful though.  If the ice isn't thick enough you could die.

Good chance this ends up as the coldest 6 week period the PNW has seen since 1978-79.

I am looking forward to it not being quite so cold. The week straight of sub-freezing highs with 6"+ snow on the ground has made it a huge pain in the a** from the perspective of caring for my livestock. Not only making sure the sheep have enough food, but also making sure everyone's water bowls and troughs aren't constantly iced over.

Yeah busting the ice in the horses water trough is not fun.

We come from the land of the ice and snow.

Wasn't rod hill calling for 4 inches

Several days ago he went crazy and said maybe 6 inches, but then he lowered it to 1-3 inches. PDX NWS went with 2-4 this morning. I was feeling pretty good about 1-2 inches but this precip just doesn't' have the ooomph to get this done. Not able to really overcome the dry gorge winds which keep eating away at the moisture.

The NWS made an assumption based on a false premise.
