February Weather in the Pacific Northwest

OT - absolutely dumping rain here again.   All the patio doors wide open to the lanai with constant thunder and lightning and its still crazy warm out there.    Rain is very rare in this area which averages less than 10 inches per year.    Tropical downpours most of the night per the ECMWF and then sunny and 85 again tomorrow and every day this week.   :)

I have actually made that point to people before but then just default to calling it that here because you hear it so often.    They are way bigger than hotel balconies though... like another room.

Does not seem to matter when we come back... there is likely to be snow on the ground at our house when we get there.     The duration of this cold spell is looking seriously impressive.

For the first time I can ever remember I could care less how cold it gets tonight with this cold air mass as long as it freezes. I feel like my a$$ has been kicked this winter. At least this late cold will kill off some of the bugs. I am just bone tired.

Will get ours. Let’s hope Tuesday evening over performs.

What areas have you thought about moving to?

Central WA, Spokane, or Missoula.

I've had it with this climate and that has been the case for a while now.  Not only the agonizing ordeal to get snow, but also the gloom the second half of winter and in the spring.

The Euro shows a ton of chances.  Maybe one of them will happen.

I was out all evening and was pretty surprised to see the aftermath up here. Maybe 1/2" to 1" generally across Vancouver, with a bit more on the east side of town.

Ridgefield seems like a sweet spot more often than not. I was on the PSU campus when the snow was falling a couple hours ago. Probably 1/2" on the grass right in downtown. Enough for a measurable total I would guess.

Got a little over a half inch this morning. I actually was up on Bachelor for most of it, but 15" fell up there overnight and today so it was nice to see a good dump. Winds switched to northerly here so we're getting upslope and some light to moderate snow now. Currently 25 degrees so everything is sticking nicely.

Sadly that band fell apart just as light snow started to fall here. Just 2 miles east of my location there is accumulation. Sucks that I ended up with literally nothing after all of that but at least a lot of others scored :).

On to Tuesday.

We didn't have anything in the Central or south valley either. Looks like we have several chances this week though.

Nice to hear downtown Portland got something measurable. Really didn't expect that.

Clark County as a whole does pretty well, especially once you get out of downtown Vancouver. I've been pretty pleased with how we've fared lately relative to other spots. Winter total is up to 5" now, just like that.

Yeah it is pretty frustrating because this type of thing is just luck a lot of the time. Both for the Christmas eve event and this, the heaviest precip just ended up further east. West and south metro have fared pretty poorly this season. HIO has probably had a total of .5 inches of snow this entire season while Gresham has to be well over 5 inches by now.

Some interesting changes from the 12z and 00z ECMWF models. Previously the main low would continue south with kind of a enhancement occurring between SW WA and NW OR, this kept the gradients either weak or offshore. Now the 00z ECMWF just brings the low onshore at the OR/WA border which turns most of the lowest elevations in the PDX metro to rain. This is obviously better for areas north but bad for down here.

06z NAM brings the Tuesday low a bit closer. Looks very snowy for PDX metro

Once again the main precip band comes through during peak heating. Ugh. Still seems weird that it would be rain for the Central Valley given the low placement esp if Eugene had snow.

Cold dry air in place and no southerly or westerly gradient, that should work regardless of timing I think.

FYI the UKMET shows this band too.

Here is the low sliding down the coast.

band setups up over us and enhances

The low continues on south but the band over NW OR continues to dump snow.
