September 2018 Weather in the Pacific Northwest

Yep. Came close to something good in January (was actually one of the coldest Januaries in the past 25 years for many places), but no significant lowland snows or major Arctic intrusions.

Fake cold under a ridge.

Fake cold under a ridge.

Had to have cold air in place to start with to get as cold as it did under the ridge. It ended up being just a glancing blow with the main cold going further east, but it was still a legitimate air mass with blocking heading into "fake cold" setup.

You'd see a lot more cold months if all it took was a ridge over the PNW to produce cold. Last December would have been frigid!  ;)

It was a lot closer to something good than most Januaries have been.

January 2013 was extremely cold in the western interior basins.

In terms of last December... It was actually the 15th coldest out of 126 December's on record at EUG. ;) 5th driest December in that span.

So far SLE is running a +2.0 departure on the year.

Much warmer than last year so far, however, no where close to 2014-2016 warmth.

Yeah, but for the region overall, Dec 2017 wasn't that cold. Definitely not nearly as cold as Jan 2013.

But Saturday still looks nice!

12Z ECMWF does not even show PDX reaching 80 this week.   Mid to upper 70s and sunshine with dry air in late September makes me want to puke my guts out.    The horror of it all.

Yeah, seems like a fairly typical late September week.

Four 80+ days with one or two hitting 85+ is somewhat notable for this late. Probably no record highs, though.

Prayers coming your way... a true nightmare of pleasantness!

Yeah, 85+ is gonna be tough with what appears to be a pretty paltry downslope component and a decent breading ground for morning inversions.

Offshore gradients look like they could pick up a bit later in the week. Although models have been all over the place as to how they handle the approach of that ULL, so that could change things.

Models consistently have kept NW flow at 500mb despite rising heights. Not a typical accompaniment for a strong westside thermal trough.

Haha! I’m making you talk about weather.

Did you hear the Seahawks won yesterday! And Doug Baldwin yelled at someone on the sindelines. Sorry I didn’t post about the Seahawks yesterday, needed to make at least one post about it.

Currently sunny and nice out my office window!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

I was watching the game. He was yelling at one of the coaches.

Speaking of football, yesterday Buffalo destroyed Minnesota as 17 point road dogs. That's not the biggest upset Buffalo has had though. Back in 1968, they beat the NY Jets as 20 point underdogs.

Pretty dry day out there in the south Sound area.  I saw a tiny dry crack forming in some drying mud.  I'm sure after this upcoming week there'll be nothing left of local livestock but sun-bleached bones ....  Please rain soon, Lord have mercy...

I am just pleased that the Browns have a better record than the Seachickens.

In terms of weather I hope this upcoming retrograding ridge into the Gulf of Alaska is a harbinger of things to come this winter *********** Think snow;)

I really hate alder trees in general... they are so messy. They actually start dropping leaves in June whenever there are a couple warm days.

I was looking at some pictures from one year ago this week and the alder trees here were already brown and close to bare. They were heading that way this year as well in late August but the recent rain and completely stopped the leaf drop and they look green again.

I assume this is good sign for fall color in this area. Could be quite a show now that everything is so well watered again.

When was the last time the Browns won the Super Bowl?  Or even been?  Or won a playoff game?  To not be a fan of the local team is one thing, but to insult them is just classless, especially from a fan of a team that has never even been to the Bowl, not even once.  To make it worse, they are located in Cleveland.  That is an insult in itself.

You got me on that one. I am just a fair weather fan who feels naked after losing all of my favorite players with grit and attitude. Sorry for the lack and of tact and trump like outburst. It won't happen again. Cheers!
