January 2019 Weather in the Pacific Northwest

Requiem

Recommended Posts

Unbelievable that it’s raining in the PNW in winter. Especially considering the very wet last several months you guys have had.

If this forecast follows through (rain on 1/20 and 1/22), January won't even be in the top 5 driest Januaries in Portland airport history. So rainy and depressing. When will the sun come out?

Now 6" in the yard. The event just came to an end, now raining.

I saw only one other report from this area which was 4 hours ago and that person only got 2". I made sure NWS knew about my place. :P

Nice event. Your best of the winter so far isn't it! I know you are a couple hundred feet higher than the airport down there, I bet that made some difference in this situation.

Biggest last couple winters. I was just mentioning that on facebook =

Apparently this is the biggest in 2 years. On 02/07/2017 I had 6.60". And since 02/19/2017 nothing over 4.00" until now.

I don’t think you need to move all the way to Amarillo to get 17” of snow. Almost all of the populated areas of SW BC get that much or more. Or just move to the foothills around 1000ft. I’m sure Tim easily averages over 30”

I've lived in the PNW all my life so I'm looking to move to a warmer climate. It would be great to live in a place that gets lots of snow but it won't be a requirement for me. I actually thought about moving to Welches down here but the commute to work would be too long.

A warmer climate with more snow? Best of luck, you’ll need it!

I spent a week in Chicago at the end of April/beginning of May 2016. It was much cooler than I expected. Highs in the upper 40s the first two days. I think it hit 70 the last day I was there. But the weather the first couple of days was about like what we are experiencing outside here today.

Their annual average temp is probably lower than ours, though.

The annual average temperature in Chicago is 2 degrees cooler than Seattle and 5 degrees cooler than Portland.

Minneapolis is 6 degrees cooler annually than Seattle... and still has plenty of summer warmth and humidity.

Yeah, the Midwest tends to be a bit slow to start spring. Average April high in Portland is 61.4ºF which beats most Midwest cities at that time of year. Chicago gains the lead in May, mainly because of latitude (Chicago is at the same latitude as the OR/CA border). Other midwestern cities have similar May weather to Portland. Midwest is still more changeable in May I think - they can still get cold snaps (although not cold enough to snow) and can also get heat waves, while the coldest May weather you'll encounter in Portland is mid-50s and rain and the record high is 100 compared to 106 in Minneapolis.

BTW, squall line passed through here not too long ago while I was eating. Loud heavy rain.

The coldest winter I ever saw was the summer I spent in San Francisco.

My point exactly. Most climates that are meaningfully snowier than here will have lower average temperatures than we do, even if their summers are warmer. He said he wanted to move to a warmer climate, which I interpret to mean warmer all around. If he’s just looking for warmer summers and snowier winters he pretty much has a good chunk of the intermountain west, Midwest and northeast to choose from.

Froze my butt off at the Cubs game. It was low 40s at game time with strong winds.

Went to a White Sox game a few days later and it was very pleasant with temps in the low 60s for an evening game.

Was glad I had the opportunity to see a game at Wrigley, especially the year the Cubs broke the curse, but attending a White Sox game was actually much more pleasant in a modern stadium. We were able to get tickets for a pretty reasonable price not far behind the 3rd base dugout, paid less I think than we paid for our obstructed view nosebleeds at Wrigley. Wrigley has a lot of history and is quaint, but also quite a dump.

Chicago is more heavily influenced by the GOM rather than its latitude.

My preferences can beat up your preferences’ dad.

Portland has seen lows in the 20s and highs in the 40s in May FWIW.

Fenway is the same way according to my dad. They went to a Mariners game back there last summer and he said the stadium experience was pretty awful.

Wrigley is kind of a tourist experience. It seemed like about half the crowd were from out of town like us, checking off that box "see a game at Wrigley" on their list. The White Sox crowd was a lot more passionate, though smaller. They were actually playing the Red Sox, so at least we got to watch them play a good team.

We try and check out a game of whatever pro-sport is in season when we are traveling. We went to a Wizards game in DC last March, another terrible atmosphere. Half empty arena and fans that were not into it. I don't go to many NBA games, but having been to games in Portland and OKC the crowd there was pretty weak by comparison.

It snows above 4000ft in the Appalachians in May on a relatively frequent basis. So I think it would be quite possible for it to snow in Chicago as well. At least during the first week of the month.
