I'm talking about PDX. Hillsboro in fact hit 56. The arctic east winds killed it for Portland because of course they did.

What's weird about this January is that there hasn't been any cold but the warmest day was only 55ºF. Odd.

2017 had awful smoke, but the memorable heatwaves (June 24-25 and August 2-3) were more Melbourne-like events that lasted a couple days and then cooled down.

 

2018's heat wasn't a quick burst though. It was a persistent valley-effect heat that just lingered for days on end, then a three day break, then more heat. Portland actually lucked out with smoke compared to other parts of the PNW. Southern Oregon and far NorCal were smoked out for months on end. This summer, we might not be so lucky.

00z GFS Ensembles did not improve, but still modestly chilly with backdoor cold signal Gorge/east. 00z FV3 is not good. Block undercut very quickly. That's the main way I could see this all falling apart.

Got the full eclipse here in bellingham.... its like the 19th one ive seen in the last 10 years and every single time they tell us its the first one of its kind in over 12,000 years.

Now of course the GEM looks fantastic.  As for the GFS and FV3...they are still very much the same in the believable time frame.  The FV3 in particular has just one small detail that goes awry and snowballs into a big disaster.  Typical model bahavior.

Just kind of interesting to see a dry SW wind. Normally the dry winds are E or NE depending on where you are and the wet winds are SW.
