May 2019 Observations and Discussion

While a significant tornado and very damaging, I'm of the understanding that the statements of "total destruction" are not true. Either way, a lot of very fortunate people in my area today.

Spotting, chasing, and providing reliable storm reports out here at night is a bit of a pain but inaccuracies and exaggerated reports make things far worse on people.

The one positive to those is that in the end, I'm glad it wasn't as bad as feared.  :)

Not much in the way of rain today like expected, very scattered in nature. Not like we need it terribly anyway and there's more chances to come this week. Sure is chilly and windy though. My roommate's hometown is Gering, NE and he posted on his Snapchat story of snow in his yard this morning. Yikes.

Very little rain got up here overnight. All the heavy storms kept everything south. We should get a half inch later today as the main band swings through. It sure is a rotten day.... 40s, damp, and windy.

Pretty crazy when it's almost winter like in late May & we're wasting away my favorite month shivering through many hours of chilly rain! I'm looking forward to a few days of warmer weather starting tomorrow. That warmer air could provide the fuel for strong to severe storms, especially on Friday according to the SPC. A few days ago DMX was thinking Thursday could be a severe day, but not so much as of now. I'm not rooting for severe like I saw last week. Just warm weather and an occasional strong storm with more dry hours. Oh well, can't have everything how I would like it to be!

48 and strong east wind with pouring rain.

Yes, it's a terrible day.  The wind has gusted over 40 mph here.  The rain recently moved in.  It can't be much worse on May 21st.

This is quite the expansive storm system traversing the middle of the nation.  If there's any beauty that one can appreciate from this system, it's both the visible satellite imagery along with the massive comma shape on radar.  You could have fooled me if you'd say this was a Winter Storm system in the dead of Winter.

Rain missed east of here barely. Yawn once again. Let's see what tonight has to bring.

People in Jo Daviess county (far nw corner of Illinois) are thinking, "What's this rain everyone keeps talking about?".  They've been missed by everything, getting less than a half inch in recent days while it's piling up in other areas.

It’s been quite crazy. There’s even a noticeable difference between just my area and the western half of Dubuque county.

I’m sure the farmers aren’t too upset about it, though.

Good Luck down there!

We were lucky. We received an inch of rain which came down very fast.

That means a lot is run off into that already near over flowing spillway.

As we have a number of sunny days ahead, I'm sure they'll be emptying it as fast as they can, but a winter and spring of rain, won't drop quick.

We have been lucky. No tornados to date. A few small twisters dropped, but nothing like many midwestern cities are dealing with.

Up to 0.64" so far. With a couple of moderate to heavy bands about to move into Cedar Rapids, we should be able to get to an inch for a total.

My 7-day rainfall total so far is 3.14". GFS has another 7-9 inches falling in Iowa over the next two weeks.

Finished with 0.84" of rain. Winds have really picked up after the rain has moved out.

My total rainfall for the month of May so far is 4.37". If long term models are right, should be able to add on at least another 1-3 inches on to that before the end of month with this wet pattern.

I received a little rain Monday evening already, but only 0.12" by yesterday morning, then it poured in the evening bringing my storm total to 0.97". Actually, the storm total is over 4" as its been less than 24 hours between all these recent rains!! Parts of the yard are a soggy mess and I'm having a hard time getting the lawns mowed.

I am not surprised that this storm system generated so many tornados after feeling the air. The heavy Gulf air has been suffocating. But once the system is past us the air will dry out and feel better.

Yesterday and last night saw 30 tornados formed. I'm so glad none of our members have been affected to our knowledge.

This was one nasty few days. Flooding still an issue. The Central Plains certainly got clobbered.

Temperature 72* this morning.

Our humidity is high this morning at 90%. Dewpoint 70*

Looking out into the longer range, I'm starting to think that the overall pattern gets suppressed a bit which will allow the MW/Upper MW/GL's to dry out Week 2-4.  There are some longer range signals showing a ridge to fire up across western North America and with high lat blocking in place, I could see a persistent NW Flow pattern developing.  We will be heading into this part of the LRC post Memorial Day weekend so I'm anticipating a very cool start to June...about the time when I'm thinking of coming back home.

Currently at 52 w cloudy skies and rain moving in shortly, but diminishing later this afternoon. Temp will bottom out today at 60F. Still running BN. Tomorrow should feel great as the thermometer reaches, potentially at that 80 Degree mark. Although, t'stms will be the forecast. Cools off by the weekend.

Btw: My area is under a Flood Watch, due to an easterly wind flow, which will push water onshore for those residents that live by the water. Winds should eventually switch to more of a south wind later today and the "Watch" should expire.

Yes, that can be annoying. I know exactly what ya mean. I suggest you wait till the grass dries up a bit. Neva cut the grass when its damp. A wet grass usually tends to cut less, resulting in larger clippings.
