I remember the same thing happened in 2008 and 2011 with the trees holding onto their leaves late into the fall. And of course last year after the very late and stunted start. The complete opposite happened in 2016. The trees were strikingly bare by early October that year. They started changing colors in August... after leafing out in March. My guess is that they have a built in time period requirement that they need to be fully leafed out each year. But that is just a guess. We can check back on this topic in late November. I am willing to bet there will be lots of trees with leaves at Thanksgiving... way more than usual. I remain highly, highly skeptical of this, but I’ll admit there could be some truth to it. Last year it seemed like there simply wasn’t enough accumulated cold which is what causes them to create the hormone that sets buds.
