March 2020 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

Weather seems so trivial right now. But it is a passion of mine and I think it is important for us to keep in touch with things we enjoy right now. So I will continue following it and rooting for kinds that I like.

Trivial things are more important now than ever, or at least that might be true depending on how you look at it.

Sad... but does not remind you that life keeps moving on.    That is a live cam here.   There are some people there so the campus is not closed.

Long range GFS shows actual SW flow followed by onshore ridging in the West. +EPO too.

I know, clown range GFS and all, but the fact that the final SW is starting up makes it pretty convincing that a pattern change could occur next week.

What is onshore ridging?

Where all the highest heights are actually onshore, like this:

as opposed to what we've had most of the time since early February, where all the highest heights are offshore:

That is generally called an inland/intermountain ridge. Or SW flow. Never have heard of the other term, I'm assuming you just made it up.

Spent time with my family clearing out the vegetable garden today and getting it ready.   Even had help from the kids.  It was really uplifting to be working out there in the warm sun.

I am hoping for a mild spring and summer with normal rainfall so we have a spectacular garden and everyone else does as well.   Cold that hurts or delays crops would just add insult to injury right now.    I really hope that does not happen.

I’m sure there will still be plenty for you two to whine about either way...

And I'm sure my 1:100 ratio of complaining will give you a lot more to whine about. Mostly because I won’t be complaining about the right things, of course. ;)

18Z GFS actually had a very decent valley rain and mountain snow pattern in the mid to long range.

I really like the trends right now.  The runs are certainly trending colder for next week.  Could have a shot at some big minus departures once again.  Amazingly 1955 has been showing up as an analog for quite some time now

Meanwhile my average low over the last 10 days is at 30.6.  Probably the coldest 10 day average of the cold season.

Yeah I really liked the look of the 12Z Euro at points in week 2.

This might be shocking to some...But I would like to see some rain. The air has been very heavy with pollen. Need a day of rain to knock it down.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

I agree... a day or two a week with rain (preferably warm rain) at this time of year is nice. It seems to advance the foliage faster as well.

Of course the way it will actually go is that we will end up with 2-3 weeks of non-stop rain again.

Low of 33 here with some frost on the rooftops again.

Really liked the overall pattern on the 06z.

Looks good for mountain snow and it is not the kind of continuous warm front drizzle pattern Tim hates. A lot of times once we get into this time of year we can have really nice mornings and showery afternoons.
