March 2020 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

Despite looking more troughy on Sunday... the ECMWF still shows a dry and mild weekend.

Early next week looks more troughy as well and Monday is quite wet on this run.

me trying to determine what someone’s opinion of “improved” means this time of year...

Obviously for Jesse and Andrew... improved means cold and wet year round. And the opposite for me. Easy.

Maybe you and everyone else!

I really think the weather this week is a big help mentally for people... compared to if it had been dark and raining all week. We can't go anywhere but it's just nice to be outside.

It took till March 15th but winter finally showed up. I recorded 35" of snow at my house in 48 hours. Totals at lake level were between 30-50". Ski resorts totals are in the 70-100" range (all closed for the year). It was a true classic Sierra snow storm!

That's awesome news! for the virus

Some cruel irony that the ski resorts there finally get clobbered but have to be closed for something totally non-weather related.

All U of Wyoming dorm students have to e out of their dorms by April 5.  On top of that our daughter came down with Mono and is too sick to fly so yep, on our way to Laramie in the early morning to pick her up.  We'll drive to Jerome ID day one, then to Laramie, day two so a marathon run.   What will make this trip memorable is that from when we leave Salt Lake City and travel up through  Park City on day two we will be heading into the teeth of a pretty good snowstorm.  3-6" of blowing and drifting snow., gusts to 30.    I guess this will be my chance to enjoy what I didn't get to this winter.  This could be interesting.  I'm good at driving in snow but the blowing and drifting will make it a little white knuckle.  We'll see how far we get Thurs.  4-wheel drive Tahoe should git er done.  Just don't drop the hiway gates on me.

56f in Laramie today.  I'll try to run in front of the camera on Friday.

Run out and get a dash cam if you don't have one already. Could be good footage of the drive.

I'm back home now. Did I miss a thunder/snow earlier? At 5pm KLMT recorded 39 and thunder, then snow at 6pm. Came back to an easy 1" to 1.5" on most surfaces. A little bit melted from roads.

The OBS do look believable after checking radar loops, a few isolated returns around 45 dbz.

Kind of interesting to see the models trending very slowly toward the troughing next week digging more directly over us instead of off the coast.  Pretty possible we will see another round of continental cold sometime in the next two weeks with the persistent GOA blocking.  The real kicker would be if the PV collapses and gets driven toward us with the high amplitude blocking.

Monday morning was certainly a disppointment.  There was such amazing potential for a remarakbly cold morning and all we could manage was mostly mid 20s to low 30s.  Somewhat impressively I've had three consecutive lows of 28 or lower and a month to date average low of 33.6.
