I follow  your weather close in Maryland. My uncle  farms 400 acres.   This  severe dry is odd there! Unfortunately  its getting  common  here.  2012 and 2017 did the same. Very little rain june 1 to sept 10th. And several  other years had long summer dry periods considerably  below the 60 yr normals.  2 to 4 weeks of totally burned up vegetation  per year is fine. But were averaging  8 to 14 weeks since 2012!!!  And my particular  county seems to be singled  out often! Nuts really. I didn't  think southeast  iowa was the dakotas! Literally  dont even have to mow 8 to 12 times many years 😪

Yeah it’s the worst drought since 2002 or 2008 depending on which metrics are used.

The weather is just weird/off this year in general. Lots of dry NW flow, haze, and a lack of humidity/moisture in general.

Personally I am loving the low dewpoints, but I don’t think the trees/ecosystem feel the same way. 😂

That’s Texas for ya. Yeah, it gets gnarly here. That Gulf air is just starting to wind up for the pitch too.  We still have 3 months of summer ahead.  But if Nino gets his way, we may have some summer rain and a real winter this year.

Well today looks like the day of the long awaited hopefully significant rain. There are still some big differences in the models with the GFS spitting out only about 0.25" of rain all the way up to the NAM soaking us with over 3" of much needed rain. Fingers and toes crossed we all see some liquid gold today!
The rest of the week looks like near to slightly below normal temps and dry.
Records for today: High 95 (1914) / Low 42 (1979) / Rain 2.36" (1968)

We had a very warm day in the low 90’s. Humid.
Our storms hit right on time and boiled and rumbled until about 10:30.   I saw some of the most beautiful cloud to cloud lightning tonight punctuated with jagged bolts to the ground and nearby clouds with flash lightning setting the backdrop.
A real floor show.  No rain totals but I’ll guess less that 1/2”. No hail, no tornadoes to my knowledge. Just some real eye candy.

Those type of nights are the best to just sit outside on your deck and watch the show from Nature!

Waking up this morning to a cool and comfy 67F as the sun is shining, clear blue skies and calm winds.  These mornings never get old living out in the desert.  Bonus summer weather continues for the next few days.  It may not get out of the 80's for a high today!   Have a great Monday everyone!

Absolutely, but I would’ve been soaked so I watched from the sunroom.

if my phone battery had been charged enough I would have filmed it. The colors were gorgeous.
Numerous grays with pinks, peaches, lavenders, blues and whites. All strobing and bouncing across the sky.
the energy was palpable, very cool.

I’m wondering if these storms are created by Nino flow as we don’t get them every year.

Go figure.  Light rain all day yesterday though.  Not much around .18", but this map is just maddening.

85 today

A 40% chance of round 2 of rain tonight and tomorrow.
Clouds building. If we get it should be after 7:30. That’s nice. We’ll not refuse it as by August we’ll be wishing for this stuff!

The official H/L at Grand Rapids yesterday was 64/50. There was no rain fall, there was 30% of possible sunshine. There were 0 HDD’s and 0 CDD’s. It was one of the coolest maximums for any June 12th across the area. That high at GR was the 7th coolest for any June 12th  At Muskegon the high of 62 was the 6th coolest at Holland their high of 62 was the 4th coolest and at Lansing the high of 63 was the 6th coolest for a very cool mid June day.

The overnight low and current temperature here in MBY is 48. For today the average H/L is 79/58 the record high of 95 was set in 1894 and the record low of 39 was set in 1985. The record rain fall amount of 2.23” fell in 2005. Today should be the last really cool day with highs still in the 60’s there is a chance of showers today. The rest of the week will be warmer.

Thanks for the info Stormy.  I recall many many years ago, when I traveled to Poland and remember my uncle and his neighbors bale hay multiple times a year for their cows and farm animals.  It's a very community-like feel out there as everyone helps one another and trades for food or supplies.  Do you have contracts with vendors to sell your alfalfa?  Or is it just for personal use?

Used to be for personal use, but now we sell most of it to a nearby farming cousin who rents the field a year at a time, and they do all of the harvesting. My sister's family used to rent it before they moved to Nebraska. I sold my livestock a few years ago so don't need the hay. I don't own the land and just used to buy the hay from my brother who farms.

Model trends over the last day have slightly delayed the onset of the heat. I still think its coming, but the low pressure area focused northeast of here as well as the strip of negative height anomalies extending this way look to hold on a little longer.

This should at least keep rain chances alive for another week. Current guidance focuses it a little more over my area than previous stuff as well. I can hope. Every day we stay below 90 just means a little less peak summer.

We ended up with 1.97" of much needed rain in the bucket from yesterday's storm! That was the most rain in a single day so far in 2023. It also is the most daily rainfall since back on September 7th last year when we received 2.59" of rain. While we are now above normal for rainfall in June we are still have a rainfall deficit of 6.46". A beautiful day today with slightly below normal temps before a chance of a little more rain tomorrow before drying out on Thursday.
Records for today: High 96 (1902) / Low 42 (1907) / Rain 2.48" (1939)

I remember seeing some earlier model runs showing heavier rainfall for much of Michigan and being a little jealous, but sadly, those runs must have been off as often seems to be the case. And the models vary a lot for my area later this week and don't really seem to have much of a clue. But we don't seem to be seeing a wetter pattern yet.

I give up! Forget  this summer. Forget all the el nino predictions  of wet summer.  Just ridiculous.  .23 this system.  Now 5 straight  cloudless  days this week. Just a terrible  place to grow  things and have a lawn care business  since 2012.

I don't know if Nino summers here are necessarily often wet, but rather aren't nearly as likely to have a drought, though this year is different, and strange so far. Then again, summer has just begun.

I had a low of 43⁰ yesterday morning. Kind of strange that you were cooler.

Took a break from some forums. In case anyone wondered, I didn't get any t'storms out of this last severe wx event.

Looks like south central KY had some large hail out of it. But not as widespread as some of the events back in April or March.

I guess we're ending Spring on a slightly drier note than this time last year, but we're still just as green as ever around here.

The cicadas are a bit later, it was around end of May last year when they started singing around sunset.

Amen to that! Insurance is high enough!
we have some pop up storms right now. Very small but everyone is rolling dice on their driveways for the rain!
We grab it whenever we can, much as Midwest farmers are.

If I could send those farmers a few days of gentle rain I would. 😢

Happy Flag Day. The official H/L yesterday at Grand Rapids was 70/49. Both officially and here in MBY there was 0.07” of rain fall. However, with the cool temperatures and the little rain that fell on Sunday the grass has greened up a little. There was 37% of possible sunshine and 5 HDD’s and 0 CDD’s.

The overnight low and current temperature in MBY is 48 with clear skies. For today the average H/L is 79/58 the record high of 96 was set in 1894 and the record low of 38 was set in 1978. The record rain fall amount of 2.89” fell in 1972.

Today looks to be mostly sunny but still a little cooler then average. There is a chance of some showers tonight and tomorrow. A warming trend is on tap and the rest of this week and into next week looks to have some very nice summer weather but looks to continue to be on the dry side.

So far in June the official rain fall amount for Grand Rapids is 0.19” Here in MBY I have recorded a little more with a total of 0.30” At Grand Rapids the official amount of rain fall since May 1st is 1.03” Here in MBY the total since May 1st is 1.02”

I think it's been a bit drier here than many places. So far only 0.32" for June and it's been very dry since early May. But sw. Iowa, etc also has low areas which often are cooler and thermometers also vary a bit.

79 and on our way to 90.
Our rain chances evaporate by noon so it’s back into the hot box.
It’s been a coolish summer so far so no complaints.

And yes even for windy ol Texas it’s been unusually calm.

Not sure about the rest of the areas, but is anyone else noticing how little wind we have for weeks now?  Our area usually has a lot of wind just based on our geography.

That is a good observation. Less wind around these parts as well. And I also haven't really seen much a true thunderstorm yet this year. I wanna sit out on the patio with a cold one while watching a storm move in. Hasn't happened yet this year.

Some showers are crossing the county this morning and some spots could see as much as 0.25" of rain but suspect most spots end up with a bit less than that. Near normal temps look to continue for much of the rest of the week with additional shower chances on Friday.
