1/8-1/10 Panhandle Hook

Recommended Posts

At 5am there were reports of 6 inch amounts in Lees Summit and Blue Springs (eastern suburbs of KC) I would say those amount have gone up since given a heavy band has sitting over that are for a few hours.  Snow starting to pick up again here.

The Des Moines/Ames area appears to be the overnight winner, with reports of 8-10".

Just over 4" here.  Range was 3.5-4.5" on my measurements.  Most common were 4-4.3".  It's snowing lightly now, but heavier bands are finally moving back in.  Davenport is going to be the big winner in Iowa.  Already over 5" as of 6am and they are getting rocked right now and have been for awhile with no end in sight.  They will push well over a foot.  I think 8" is our ceiling in my backyard unless some strong bands park overtop of us here.

Maybe- but that band I mentioned earlier and posted a radar pic did this-- and still snowing. Some these places will be near 1' also-image.thumb.png.3329cce4eb050a09dae3c9d16ea80a9a.png

Nothing like you all, but I did get a little. 0.2" is what I measured. At least you can tell it happened. 29F now with a brisk NW wind. It'll all be gone by noon or so.

I didn't realize there was nearly a 10" report when i posted that.  Last I looked the report was 7" in central Iowa.  Certainly they could end up with the highest total, but it wouldn't surprise me if someone in the Davenport area finishes with 12-15".

Looking at overnight radar the band that formed overhead around 5pm last night stuck around until roughly 6am this morning, occasionally strengthening to fairly decent returns. We ended up with additional 3.5-4 inches during that time. That should put us somewhere around 14 inches total, which was near the high end of guidance. I'll go out and measure in a bit to be sure but I have to drink my coffee and warm up first. Currently 15 with a wind chill of 8. In a few days, that would feel downright warm.

Overnight snow really boosted our totals here in the Omaha metro as I measured right around 6" total in my backyard.

Thankfully this storm didn't end up being a bust (even though we ended up on the "lighter" side of forecasted amounts), we unfortunately got caught in the middle with the wacky thermals and low level warm air that caused lots of melting yesterday... however it still worked out okay. Now it's on to the end of week "refresher" system incoming.

I'm right in the heart of that.  A heavy band is moving through Iowa City right now and heading right towards me.  Fingers crossed we see 1"+/hour rates here.

I was just going to say these snowfall rates are going to need to really start increasing here, or the NWS missed the mark by quite a bit.

I know there was a good chance of rates increasing during the day, but it just needed to happen..

Yeah, a yellow band is about to move over Homestead.

I am up to 6 inches.  The snow has been a bit lighter than expected so far this morning, with too many breaks, but it's dumping now.

Looks like I ended up with about 13.5 inches here. Sioux Falls officially recorded 10.5" yesterday which was a daily record. Storm total was 10.9" which puts this in the #9 spot for highest two-day storm total in January. My 13.5" recording would actually be good enough for the #1 spot.

Yellow is parked overtop my house now, but the snow has only picked up a little bit.  Flake size is just medium sized, no big flakes and not dumping down hard.  I'd still call this moderate snow.  Kind of disappointing.

Took several measurements, all between 5.5 and 6.5".  Very consistent measurements given the wet nature of the snow.  The top layer is getting more fluffy though.  I'll average those and call it 6" here and coming down moderately still.  Looks like another 6 hours or more to go.  I'm thinking we get to 9" here.

I measured 7.0" at 10:30am in CR. I think somewhere between 9-10" is a good bet here.

Radar shows bands of yellow moving across the area, but as of now, the snow is not as heavy as I would think it would be based on the radar. Hopefully the rate picks up around here a bit.

Liking the looks of radar right now.  There is a major band of dark green and yellow NW of the Quad Cities that is rotating this way, if it holds together or even strengthens, that band is definitely dropping 1-2" per hour rates.  Overall everything seems to be strengthening right now.  8" is a minimum now, 10" is on the table still.

Second round moving through with temps at 33. Moderate snow.   Melting some though.  Grass is almost covered.  Roads are slushy.   Looks like a few hours of this could add up to a few inches.

Looks like I finished with 5-6". Not too bad after getting off to a slow start.

Love it, what a true "spread the wealth" type system for the central plains... this storm definitely had some twists and turns for us all - however it turned out decent overall for Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri. Building that Midwestern snow glacier!

Saw a report of 8-9 in the Kearney area. Probably pretty close to what I have. Nice.
