It's snowing pretty good and I don't hear anything like sleet hitting the skylight. It's just snow.

Check out what's coming up to Salem. Another band of heavy precipitation. Not sure if it will stay together by the time it gets to Portland area. I'm going to take a nap. Didn't really sleep well last night. It happens a lot when these events come up...lol.

A few more dogs in this run. Big potential if everything goes right. This system has a lot of juice.

Job done! BOTH headlights were burnt out…My wife was apparently only running with fog lights and didn’t know a few days ago. I had just checked her lights two weeks ago and both were good. However it had been about 3 years since I last changed them. Anyhow, between Mr Buddy heater and the radiator heater it almost felt like a typical January warm day in the garage! I currently sitting in my heated chair enjoying the view.

Wow a heated chair. Wish I had known about that back in the kids club soccer days.

This storm is very typical of the kinds of storms we can get east of Portland. In the 35+ years I have been here, I have seen this many times. In 89-90 we had two storms like this. The gorge is a monster and definitely makes its own weather. 84 will be closed, trucks will be piled up at the truck stops there, the new people will be reporting from Sylvan and Troutdale, and cars will be spun out everywhere. Never changes except when you add in ice which is a lot less fun.

I wouldn’t say this is typical, especially if you consider the combo of low temps and snow falling. It’s been many years since the Portland area has seen snow falling with temperatures in the low to mid teens.

Heavier echoes can reflect warming aloft too though, hence the dreaded sleet.

Areas that stay snow with it will get a good pounding in the next couple hours.

I totally understand that. I've been doing this for 20+ years. It all depends on how thick the cold air is what you will get. When the moisture got to me, it was snow, not sleet. Just saying.

Very. They got pummeled with ice in February 2021 but that was right around 31-32 throughout the event. Mom says it’s 25 at their place near Ilwaco.

Light snow now. My guess is this is falling out of the low cloud deck below the warm layer. Back down to 22, but it’s near freezing at 4000’ as the warm nose begins to peak.

Those extra degrees below freezing make a big difference with the accretion too.

Radar doesn't look too impressive over me at the moment, but it is still really dumping. Still sounds like icy snow here.

Maybe someone else already said it, but freezing rain on the coast has got to be incredibly rare. Especially with those temps.

Had a disappointing low of 7.5F this morning.  It was 10F at 7pm so I thought I would end up near zero.  Even though the crazy GFS says 6" plus snow Wednesday I know it over until at least February.  Currently 16F and rising faster than grandma's baked muffins.

Yeah, this will probably exceed the 1985 silver thaw out there. I think temps were in the 28-30 range for that.

I love the handoff with that mid week system.  That piece of energy breaks off and phases with the piece of energy dropping down from the NW.

Winds picking up in my part of Everett. Pretty sure these are gusts out of the Skykomish valley. We bottomed out at 13° at the surface, but I have an elevated sensor that hit 9.6°.

Sounds like busted pipes are a thing already with neighbors complaint about water not working or finding ice under their sink. Up the hill from me there are a couple city streets with large patches of ice on the sidewalk and road, and a local coffee shop unable to serve anything espresso’d because of a lack of water.

Going to be an active week.

Just an incredible freeze.  I have an old rain gauge that was half full of water and it froze so hard it made a crack almost a half inch wide down the entire side.  Every puddle here is nothing but ice.
