January Weather In The PNW 2024 (Part III) - The Warming Shot

Did anyone is western Washington experience sudden strong winds lastnight between 2am and 4am?

I was woke up with the trash can blowing around and the trees bent over howling

My wind meter recorded 26 but that is very high here, best estimate was around 40. Bremerton airport did not show much, really strange,  and my temp jumped from 23 to 31 and back down to 24 again.

Hood River is on the short list for best towns in Oregon. Unfortunately you pretty much need to be a millionaire to live there.

It’s in kind of a geographical goldilocks zone a la Cle Elum, Leavenworth, Truckee/Tahoe where it’s just far enough east of the crest to have an eastside temperature profile but far enough west that it is well outside the heart of the rainshadow.

Always enjoy the drive up Highway 35 from Government Camp to the Gorge.

Ummm has Cliff lost it? Freezing rain happens BECAUSE of warm air aloft and colder air trapped at the surface. Am I missing something here?image.thumb.png.a7b5f6572c829a9998511fc52c7e2e14.png

lol.  I guess he's implying the whole column will be too warm

In all seriousness though I'm with you, it sucks to have this kind of cold and have bare ground.  I love the stats, but I love snow more!

You can see your breath when its 50 degrees lol

Okay, one more SLE stat, but I think this is the most unbelievable... January 13-14th was the first time since December 1990 SLE has had two consecutive highs of 24 or lower. Which in itself is pretty ridiculous, but SLE always seems to manage to overachieve on high temps. The more ridiculous stat... Unless I completely missed something this was the first time they've had consecutive highs under 24 (or 25) in January since 1950.

That’s incredible and hard to believe it would take that long or be that hard to have low temps on back to back days below 25f in January. Really amazing.

I think Andrew meant to say highs. Consecutive lows below 25 has happened many, many times.

That’s almost Vancouver prices, but in a metro area with even more economic and cultural opp… wait, never mind.

Seriously, that’s obscene. I guess enough people with money to burn really like windsurfing.

It's called clown range for a reason.

Almost certainly just Airbnb/VRBO fodder for some rich investor. And we wonder why there's a housing supply crunch....

I’d forgotten how therapeutic snow is. First time in 2 years I’ve seen the grass fully covered.

At long last, the snow drought is cracking.

“Too warm aloft” for freezing rain? That doesn’t make any sense. Unless he was saying “no” to snow, freezing rain instead?

Mountain wave gust?

Balkanized nocturnal gusts like that happen here when winds are W/NW and there’s a shallow stable layer that gets impinged on by eddies/mountain waves.

Mid 30's look good Today,  still really cold.

ECMWF only shows about 35 at SEA today and around 40 tomorrow.

It was really cool, I am up around 650ft so sometimes we get odd winds and it's  calm in other places out here. It was stronger wind than I had when the Frazer winds were going at the peak,  whatever it was it was impressive. Bremerton airport did go from dead calm to 15 right around the same time and they are 6 miles or so east of me.

I wish I was closer, I would let tiger use my generator.  I have a really nice jackery solar gen also that has a huge battery. I ran my cabin 3 days off it just to see.
