Same. And I don't think it will. I suspect the south valley (as always happens) is going to get annihilated. The storm will completely fall apart by the time it reaches the PDX metro and nothing of significance will fall.

35/18 today even colder than yesterday surprisingly. Don’t think we will go above 35 by midnight either. Can’t believe we’re actually going to get 2 ice events in back to back winters. It’s not very common here like it is down south. Get the feeling we see something similar to the December 2022 event in terms of accumulation…which was 0.3”.

I'm hoping so, we've kept the thermostat at 70 through all of this and faucets dripping.  My laundry room is in the middle of the house.  I think my biggest risk is the outside faucets, I have covers on them and they are the frostproof type.  No guarantees, and I can't relax just yet but I am "cautiously optimistic"

I loved that summer so much. Still can remember the late night marine pushes and lots of evening temps in the upper 50s before midnight in July.

Sounds like every summer evening up here. It is a rare summer evening that it’s not below 60F by midnight. Even in our hottest summers it happens at most 5 times.

While I love a good weather extreme as much as the next weather geek, 2" of ice does not fall in that category.  A little freezing rain (1/4" or so) with a very short duration is kinda cool for the icicles, but I want it gone within 12 hours.

Really hope you guys don't get that, and I really hope the WV warms up quickly.  That's just rough.

925 hPa temp is up to 3.4 F at Sea-Tac. It is currently 35/16 there. Clearly this is not going to be a snow event in the Seattle area, it's way too warm aloft even with evaporative cooling helping out. I think the freezing rain will be a little more impactful than originally anticipated with the cooler temps today and the ground being frozen solid. I checked my garden beds with a shovel and they are frozen to a depth of 4 inches.

Yeah, I could be mistaken but I believe the models a couple days ago were showing us closer to 40 degrees for a high today. Only maxed out at 35 as well. I do agree that the impacts will probably be more significant than 0.1” or less of ice.

Got up to 34.3, back down to 33.6, we'll see how much it drops after the sun goes down.  Noticed the maps for Bellingham have gone from showing 4-6" to 9-12"  It could get pretty interesting up here.

Actually the one inch to two inches was for snow! The ice accumulation is only expected to be for up to two tenths of an inch.

We shot up pretty quickly to 36.8 today, hovered there for an hour, and now have started to drop back down. I really thought that we were going to hit 40 and this was going to be non-event. Given how cold the ground is and where the temp is now, I have some faint hope that we will see something come out of the sky that is not rain especially if the evaporative cooling tanks things.

That is not true.   What sucked was the 30 straight days of rain from May 20 - June 20.   After that it was a decent enough summer.  Barely any rain and two heat waves and the marine layer was less extensive out here.   But late March through about June 20th in 2022 put 2010 to shame in terms of persistent rain.   So 2010 seems much nicer now!

also keep in mind that even if it is 34 the ground is still frozen and will freeze water. We could have ice build up on streets more than trees and stuff.

Unfortunately it’s very unlikely anything but freezing rain falls with this south of Everett. It’s just too warm in the mid to upper levels to support snowfall. Up north it’s colder in the mid levels of the atmosphere which is why they have a good shot at some snowfall with this.

Looks just like what we had last December here.   12 hours of sleet and then freezing rain.   Absolutely impenetrable surface.   Never seen anything like it.   And literally could not stand on it without falling down.

20221223_120530.jpg

I remember that in Feb 2007. 5” of sleet then 1/4” ZR on top. If you fell in the yard you’d slide down the hill helplessly until hitting whatever obstacle lay in your path. Lots of bruises that month

Yeah I suspect this will not be a problem for accumulating on trees and creating power outage issues. I wouldn’t recommend driving though tonight and early tomorrow morning if you don’t have to.
